Announce protest actions, general chit chat or give your opinion on issues we haven’t covered for the day.

The Editor doesn’t moderate this blog,  3 volunteers do, they are very lenient to provide you a free speech space but if it’s just deranged abuse or putting words in bloggers mouths to have a pointless argument, we don’t bother publishing.

EDITORS NOTE: – By the way, here’s a list of shit that will get your comment dumped. Sexist language, homophobic language, racist language, anti-muslim hate, transphobic language, Chemtrails, 9/11 truthers, Qanon lunacy, climate deniers, anti-fluoride fanatics, anti-vaxxer lunatics, 5G conspiracy theories, the virus is a bioweapon, some weird bullshit about the UN taking over the world  and ANYONE that links to fucking infowar.

  1. Who was the great promoter of the Auckland Supershitty – was it someone in ACT like Rodney Hide or….?
Perhaps someone should consult the historic records and give whoever a call to come and aid those affected by the failure of the systems they sort of enabled.

I’ve just cleaned up some dog poo from my lawn. I know whose dog did it or think I do. But she tries to manage a number of difficult roles and does her best. I can forgive her and the dog the occasional lapse. But Hide & Jekyll & Co. have no excuses. for their messes.
Should there be some legal return for us on these jerks playing round with our society for pleasure and profit?

  2. Isn’t that interesting. Why is that?

…The consumption of beer with low alcohol content has increased by 750 percent since 2019, according to research by an independent economic consultancy…
(It reads that because it is available people are buying it. Why didn’t we do this earlier?)

Brewers Association of New Zealand executive director Dylan Firth said the jump in demand for low-carb and low alcohol options (less than 1.15 percent) was seen across the Heineken and Steinlager brands, as well as different craft products.
“You’re seeing more people jumping into that space and because more things are available to choose from, I think people are looking to those different options.

The report showed the beer brewing industry contributed an estimated $896 million to government last year in GST and excise tax.
“Excise tax increased in line with inflation by 6.9 percent in 2022, the largest spike in 30 years,” Firth said…

Firth said most breweries created more CO2 than they needed though the fermentation process, some of which could be captured and used to carbonate drinks.
“We are working along with the government to develop longer term solutions for the brewing sector, who are uniquely placed to recapture CO2 through the fermentation process,” he said…

  4. We’ve seen the slips in Auckland and elsewhere now here is info about the why of them and understanding will be helpful to those affected now or likely to be caught out in the future.
    https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/483537/slippery-slopes-why-the-auckland-storm-caused-so-many-landslides-and-what-can-be-done-about-it
Some pointers, among a number in this information packed news item.

…These changes include the removal of vegetation, which allows more water to directly enter the soil; the creation of impermeable surfaces; and the cutting and filling of undulating slopes to enable roads and buildings to be constructed. All of these affect the near-surface drainage and hydrology.

A further problem in Auckland is often the lack of adequate building “set-back” distances. This is the distance between a dwelling and a slope or cliff edge. In some countries and jurisdictions this is specified within regional plans and taken very seriously.

One way used to calculate these distances is to project an imaginary 45 degree plane from the bottom of a slope. One third of the cliff height is then added to this. For example, a 30-metre high slope would have a set-back distance of 40 metres….

…Second, landowners should limit vegetation removal and make sure stormwater drains properly into reticulated systems, rather than informal soak-aways…

…Third, for scientists, engineers and local authorities, a more sophisticated region-wide approach to identifying unstable land is needed. The Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) uses space-borne radar to measure ground surface movement at a scale of millimetres-per-year…

In Europe, the EU-sponsored European Ground Motion Service displays almost real-time measurements of slope movements across the continent that anyone can access. Such a service would be useful across New Zealand – and the events in Auckland suggest this should be a priority.

  5. Greywarbler, I think the comments section here is what it is. The proprietor sometimes lets me on his blog and sometimes doesn’t. The force to establish things and the disinterest to govern them fairly don’t often go together.

  6. It is very human of people in situations that don’t pay well in most respects to dislike criticism. Hard to avoid that when responding to opionators. Akela, I shall try to address the ideas, and less the publisher of them, who, in our shriveling community, I know far too well.

I will forget this the first few times, maybe more. Please remind me.
