  1. St Bede’s College students have shown “bad judgment” after choosing a “Wife Beater Wednesday” dressup theme that was shut down 24 hours before going ahead, the school says.
Year 13 students from the boys’ school in Christchurch were gearing up to wear white singlets, sometimes referred to as “wife beaters”, during a week of themed dressup days to celebrate their final days of formal classes.

This just calls for cliches like ‘What’s wrong with young people today’!! It shows a great contrast with how we perceive ourselves. and what we are – there is a pool of infection that will spread out to your children and their friends if you aren’t awake and responsible. This type of thing shows a lack of maturity and morals mixed in a judicious amount which I don’t think these young ‘men’ will ever face.

It was 2015 when their elders attempted to crush their manly high spirits when playing toddler games on an airport carousel. https://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/67473960/st-bedes-college-parents-win-interim-court-injunction

Shades of UK top schools, Johnson and ‘Posh Boys’ book. Apparently there is a demarcation in USA secondary schools between ordinary students and ‘jocks’ who stride the earth like young Hercules or whatever, and who resort to bull-headed stuff and bullying.

I think this NZ college tradition will show up throughout the country – makes people expecting better want to throw up! Schools put a lot of importance on sports and wining. Pity they couldn’t turn out clever, useful, young men and women who are ready to take; up the important roles for carrying humanity forward into a disturbing future that might annihilate everything we know and love including ourselves as the end of the human race. What a piece of work is man – again (Shakespeare). But this is an example of what a great school with long collegial traditions turns out eh! Will these lofty fools go into Parliament? Be like old Brit with buying into safe seats, systems like Rotten Boroughs etc. Or is that the situation now; why we the people are abandoned right in the maws of the free marketers etc.

How come in this strange political environment that we are in, that there is such a cloak of respecting the common man and the law, but there is the ability for return visits by this free-mouthing privateer? If you call police ‘pigs’ you might get shot. I think we should respect our Courts of Law and keep them respectable. People like this should spend time in a locked-in mental institution.

Government could Have a Go Challenge at making things better for a couple of weeks a year, attending to the lax state that ordinary citizens suffer. Perhaps from Parnell’s arrival date in February? This to his first employer with a conviction that he must make an effort to improve men’s lot in NZ.

I will do my best, but I must make this condition, Mr. Hunter, that on the job the hours shall only be eight for the day … There are twenty-four hours per day given us; eight of these should be for work, eight for sleep, and the remaining eight for recreation and in which for men to do what little things they want for themselves. I am ready to start to-morrow morning at eight o’clock, but it must be on these terms or none at all.

‘You know Mr. Parnell,’ Hunter replied, ‘that in London the bell rang at six o’clock, and if a man was not there ready to turn to he lost a quarter of a day’. ‘We’re not in London’, said Parnell. With few tradesmen in the young settlement, Hunter had little choice but to accept the carpenter’s terms. As Parnell later wrote, ‘the first strike for eight hours a-day the world has ever seen, was settled on the spot.’

Other employers tried to impose longer hours, but Parnell enlisted the support of other workmen and informed those arriving on incoming ships of the local custom. In October 1840 a meeting of Wellington workmen apparently resolved to work eight hours a day, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. – anyone offending would be ducked into the harbour.

The children of the NZ pioneers have become flaccid and lack gumption so those in Labour didn’t find it hard to abandon all those past efforts for better conditions or just to maintain them, without a guilty ache at all.
