TVNZ boss sees risk of return to ‘Muldoon era’ concerns over media bias

TVNZ chief executive Simon Power has suggested there is a risk of a return to Muldoon-era concerns over public media bias if legislation paving the way for the merger of TVNZ and RNZ isn’t amended.

You gotta hand it to Simon Power, he knows how to craft a headline.

By suggesting that the RNZ/TVNZ merger would lead to ‘Muldoonism’ guaranteed the headline, which show you how clever Simon ‘House of Slytrherin’ Power is.

It is remarkable that in the same week TVNZ announces something as crass as Fuck Boy Island, showing how slavishly driven for ratings they have become in total violation of their public broadcasting responsibilities, it is amazing they can avoid any scrutiny of how craven for clickbait they’ve mutated into and still attack the RNZ/TVNZ merger!

Nothing screams why we need RNZ running the editorial line inside TVNZ than Fuck Boy Island yet because the rest of the private media are so angry about losing NZ on Air funding, they refuse to report on that juxtaposition because they want to crash the RNZ/TVNZ merger as well!

I absolutely believe that there must be Government funding for public broadcasting, this is a Fourth Estate requirement for a functioning democracy, but that funding should actually go to fucking journalism, not ‘diverse voices in the media’, which is what the funding is funding!

It’s wonderful that we have so many publicly funded angry feminist podcasts, but is it actually doing any journalism?

We can’t starve mainstream media from funding that will generate journalism that is free from corporate constraints.

Most current affairs shows are advertised and sponsored by corporations who are actually part of the problem. We need journalism that is publicly funded that can challenge those corporations and their power over policy decisions.

We need journalism that is free of money influence.

That is what NZ on Air should be funding!

Instead it’s all middle class identity politics woke bullshit that never talks about capitalism, class or economic justice in favour of middle class social justice vegan glee clubs.

The extraordinarily gross Fuck Boy Island commissioned by TVNZ shows why the RNZ/TVNZ merger must happen, because TVNZ thinks Fuck Boy Island is public broadcasting!

RNZ would never have allowed Fuck Boy Island to occur.

Can you imagine Kim Hill judging Fuck Boy Island?

How about Ethical Slut Island?

This isn’t Public Broadcasting that uplifts or builds the people or audiences involved, it demeans. I’m no prude, if a private company wanted Fuck Boy Island, knock yourself out, go for it, but on the Public Broadcaster?

We saw on the lawns of Parliament what confused and frightened citizens led by Social media disinformation hate algorithms can cause, we need a powerful Public Broadcasting asset to combat that madness or our Democracy will be lost.

This is why we need the merger.

This is why the merger needs that $80m from NZ on Air.

This means NZ on Air are less powerful.

This means the private media who have traded editorial independence and actual journalism in for woke virtue signals are hurt financially.

This means money interests in NZ might actually be challenged for the first time.

There is a lot of vested interest in killing the merger off.

What the Government must do is sort out the alternative funding structures for NZ on Air.

The $55million Public Interest Journalism fund runs out shortly and with a cut in NZ on Air funding, the Government must find new ways to source income for NZ on Air to distribute for JOURNALISM.

The answer is something the Government are already pursuing, the Journalism Tax on Google and Facebook would raise $40million per year.

This money could be ring fenced and sent straight to NZ on Air as a market solution to funding the journalism that Google and Facebook undermine!

On top of this, TV One could go advert free so as to allow private media to benefit from the redistribution of advertising.

The Government must show private media how NZ on Air will gain extra funding to do the JOURNALISM they are obliged to provide or else continue to have the merger attacked relentlessly.

Look at how the Real Estate market saturate media with advertising and then turn on that media when they talk down real estate?

Look at how the farming interests saturate Talkback radio with advertising to always promote their political world view.

Look at how free market capitalism is NEVER challenged in any media.

When you suddenly see that, you understand why National and ACT are already promising to destroy the merger if elected.

The last thing they want is actual journalism.

It is THESE interests that need challenging from Fourth Estate Journalism, not more angry feminist podcasts on the Spin Off.

Remember, the RNZ-TVNZ merger would represent the first time in 6 fucking years that Labour actually achieved something off their manifesto, so the political capital at stake here is enormous!

BTW – The Daily Blog and The Working Group DO NOT take NZ on Air money, so throw us some love below dammit!

  1. Muldoon would never have allowed ‘Fuck Boy Island’. Along with many other disgusting effects of the triumph of neoliberalism.

  2. media boss rubbishes change that will cost him money….welllll quelle surprise, what’s next a real estate company talking ramping the housing market…I’m shocked to the very core.

  3. ” TVNZ boss sees risk of return to ‘Muldoon era’ concerns over media bias ”

You have got to be joking …LOL

Well at least he shows his own bias in making that ridiculous statement.

Paul Thompson of RNZ your up next !

  4. It seems that all think this pronouncement by tv star Clever Simon is more than ironic, and are deeply cynical about TVNZ and all that sail in her. Time to give them the Crimson Assurance treatment, push them over the edge of an earthquake-uplifted cliff nearest you.

The opinions of thinking people who understand what public tv is or was, and how it can serve all sectors of the population with good quality stuff is likely to receive as much close attention as this good information on the up and down movement of earthquakes:
Oblique-slip faults have simultaneous displacement up or down the dip and along the strike. The displacement of the blocks on the opposite sides of the fault plane usually is measured in relation to sedimentary strata or other stratigraphic markers, such as veins and dikes.

  5. Nearly all the local content is drivel.
Even the weather forecast is rubbish, so most people have a weather app on their phone or go directly to the Metservice.
The News is worth watching not so much for its content as what is deliberately NOT in its content.
I saw a local standup comedy show on TV a few days ago – it was painfully weak. I gather they all have to sign up to a contract that doesn’t allow them to say anything funny about anything in case someone might be offended.
Flog the whole lot off to the highest bidders in parcels so as to avoid private monopolies forming and give the taxpayers their hard-earned money back.

  6. So is sleazy Simon saying that his smutty porn show would be worse with Muldoon in charge ? That’s hitting beneath the belt, but it seems to me that beneath the belt might be his specialty.

  7. Come on, ausies purchase radio talk back and tv3, all purile in their content of not only general knowledge ignorance but look pretty, the camera likes that. As a aside, see that TUSKER doppelganger effect they chose their new leader,no where neer the Tusker. Marshall, on Rob, he is one of the party, yet not one of us.

  8. ‘The answer is something the Government are already pursuing, the Journalism Tax on Google and Facebook would raise $40million per year.’

Why hasn’t this already happened?Murdoch got Morrison on the job quicksmart in Oz.

  9. ” Yeah, but’s it MB’s mate Willie trying to push this through, and no one likes him much ”

Well I have been critical of Willie joining the party he always opposed but he is clever and realised that LINO would entice him with his name recognition and stump up more money for Maori and ride the LINO wave into parliament and its amazing what billions of dollars can do to help hide the destitute constituency he used to represent.

Willie is a character and is a perfect guy to ride shotgun with J.T post 2023 and really deliver for the many and not the few.

Can’t wait to see the transformation.
