  1. Alcohol – nice but has hooks. Is this good. Does it need to come out of supermarkets – would it just become sleazier. There ia a lot of Australian wine in smts – could we reduce their booze if it is to be stocked elsewhere? Sell mor of our own? Is it reciprocal – would the Oz mkts take less of NZ – they can get nationalistic?

…The reality is we want TVNZ to work in tandem with us – and they’re doing that – because New Zealand has changed. We have no longer a trust in national media – no longer is there a trust in what’s happening at a national media level,” he said.

“We need a trusted public broadcaster because national identity is incredibly important and no longer do people trust New Zealand television or New Zealand radio.”

(Is it being seen that TVNZ will learn better ways than RNZ ? I should coco. You wouldn’t know what that means but I think it is Cockney but then radio tv – it;’s all meant to be unintelligible in the end isn’t it? It certainly doesn’t seem explanatory most of the time.)

The show opens tonight and runs for just under three weeks at the TSB Arena. It is the first time since 2019 that the show will be staged, following two years of Covid-19 cancellations.
More than 100 finalists from 20 countries will be eagerly waiting to find out if they have won their category on Friday night.

One of them is Brisbane designer Bethany Cordwell. She spent a year during Covid-19 lockdowns individually cutting and sewing 55,000 scales, made from plastic document folders, for her entry ‘Documental’.
“I kind of had a purpose everyday which really helped those many months that I had out of work,” Cordwell said.
“My piece was something that really helped my day-to-day process of going through Covid.”

Perhaps that is a lesson for all NZ – we are having a disease of bad governance and attitudes over the country but if we keep on with our good kaupapa for all the people, we will win through.

  4. Do we really want a new constitution. Bruce Jesson liked the idea of republicanism but then took the easy way out and died before having to sit through the stirring and depressing debates and assertions thereafter. Perhaps he would teink again after a an attack of Trump which must be like shingles on an old bloke. And its a female academic putting it forward – I’m beginning to regard them with the same apprehension that I feel on seeing a shoot of bindweed.

  5. A whole item about changing speeds for 1600 roads in Auckland and nowhere does it advise what they will be – from what to whatever! Is this an example of the reliable factual news we will be getting?

The speed limit will change on more than 1600 roads in Tāmaki Makaurau following approval by the Auckland Transport board today.
The changes are part of Auckland Transport’s Safe Speeds Programme, which received more than 8000 submissions in public consultation last year.
About 980 roads surrounding more than 70 schools would be affected by the changes.

Speed limit changes will also occur around rural marae, high-risk rural roads, town centres including Takapuna, Devonport and Glen Innes and further residential roads in Manurewa.
These will come into effect in stages between December and March 2023.

Auckland Transport safety executive general manager Stacey van der Putten said the purpose of safe speed limits was to save lives and prevent serious injuries.
“In Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland, we have a shocking number of deaths and serious injuries from road trauma. It’s just unacceptably high.”

Evidence showed speed was a factor in more than 70 percent of injury crashes in New Zealand, van der Putten said.
“We need to do everything we can to create safe school neighbourhoods, so parents feel confident their children can walk, bike or scooter to school.”

Statistics showed speed reductions were effective in reducing fatalities on roads.
In areas where speed limits were changed in June 2020, deaths were reduced by 30 percent in the following 24-month period.
Rural roads where speeds were changed at the same time had a 48 percent reduction in fatalities and a more than 25 percent reduction in serious injuries.

There is a link as part of the item. Am I expected to hunt for the facts there that should be in the original article? Am I expected to put on my Sherlock Holmes hat, grab my magnifier and hunt?
