We here at TDB like to be first at pointing shit out, but in this never ending 24-7 news clusterfuck of a media environment we all live in, even we can slip up and miss something that should get more focus, so from time to time we’ll run Under the Radar News, things of note that escaped attention.
This week, Corrections are hiding prison riots.
The lesson from the Waikeria Prison riot was that the Prison management were lying to the Minister about how understaffed they were and how detrimental that was for the Prisoners living conditions, so we won’t know there is a problem inside the prisons until a riot explodes.
Prison riots: Corrections to centrally record squad deployments after Newstalk ZB investigation
The department in charge of New Zealand’s prisons is scrambling to find out how often specialist riot squads have been deployed to control inmates.
It comes after a Newstalk ZB investigation found Corrections was effectively running blind, despite staff responding to “extremely volatile” events, like riots and brawls.
Acting National Commissioner Leigh Marsh has confirmed there was no central record of when advanced control and restraint (ACR) teams had been sent out.
“Corrections acknowledges that recording deployments was an area that needed further development.”

Will Brierley be a 501. If not why not? He was released earlier this year because of his deteriorating health – he had a very short sentence for his crimes and should have been sent to Aotearoa once he was released.
Let’s stop paying international business mobs for doing our jobs which we should tackle hands-on. The money goes from our purses, to NZ government, goes to administration and infrastructure and trying to repair some of the damage that a malfunctioning prison system causes, and the large part of the costs go into overseas hands either here, which they use to muck up the rest of our business efforts, or siphon off overseas. And to earn the money to pay these predating businesses specialising in the arts of handling and packaging humans, we keep cows in miserable conditions which if another country was doing, we would be loud in condemnation. We’re a bunch of right ones!
“Most transparent government ever”
Agree Andrew we know who has their hands all over this.
“we know who has their hands all over this”… Care to elucidate? If there is one thing I hate, it’s when people say “we all know” as if it’s an obvious fact.. I’ve found over the decades that this is nothing more than an attempt to make innuendo sound credible.. The old nudge nudge wink wink line.. Just say what you think and stop playacting as someone with inside knowledge.. It’s both annoying, and pretentious..
Gosh stefan sorry about that.
The Labour Government.
Hopefully a long time until we get to the Ecuador prison scenario but we should bear in mind that the end is there!
