MEDIAWATCH: NewsHub promote important climate denial myth

Climate campaigner urges voters to push Government, companies to act following grim IPCC report

A loud message is coming through the new UN climate change report – it is time for us all to radically change our lifestyles.

The significant report has painted a bleak picture of what is ahead without swift action, and the window for avoiding the worst is closing further every day.

Within two years, greenhouse gas emissions need to start declining.

One of the most important myths spread by Climate Deniers and their corporate enablers is the lie that collective lifestyle changes by us all can stop climate change.

Bullshit.

It’s the grand Keep America Beautiful scam. That 1970s campaign used the tears of a native American Indian crying at all the littering to hammer home the message that pollution and littering was an individual responsibility, certainly not something that required legislation.

This lie, that individual action can change the environment is an important fiction to progressives who want to give activists something positive to hope for but most importantly this lie allows the polluters off the hook!

You cycling, not eating meat, recycling and catching a bus won’t fucking change the horror apocalypse in front of us, because the real issue are the mega corporations who are benefitting from our consumer culture addiction!

Just 100 companies responsible for 71% of global emissions, study says

Just 100 companies have been the source of more than 70% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions since 1988, according to a new report.

The Carbon Majors Report (pdf) “pinpoints how a relatively small set of fossil fuel producers may hold the key to systemic change on carbon emissions,” says Pedro Faria, technical director at environmental non-profit CDP, which published the report in collaboration with the Climate Accountability Institute.

The report found that 25 corporate and state producing entities account for 51% of global industrial [greenhouse gas] emissions and all 100 [fossil fuel] producers account for 71% of global industrial [greenhouse gas] emissions.

It’s not about you becoming a flexitarian and championing bike lanes FFS, it’s about mega corporations being allowed to profit from the end of the fucking world!

Blaming consumers who have been addicted to this cheap dirty energy and not the dealers for building the infrastructure to exploit that addiction is a clever distraction from demanding radical reform of those mega corporations.

Look, sure, get a bike, catch public transport, recycle and eat less meat. Think of them as weekly prayers and rituals to post growth our lives and culture, go for it.

But don’t pretend those rituals and prayers will significantly postpone the climate crisis tipping points and catastrophic events if the mega corporations are not curtailed.

Thankfully that’s what Mike Smith is doing!

    • Not a big sciency guy then @ andrew? Rather believe in your own brain fartery than that there science and stuff and things and that there what nottery an’ all that.
Awesome! Off you go then you rebel. But don’t forget your gummies?

    • tel that to the frying and drowning aussies…no the planet will not end but the nasty skin infection on the planet we call humans will.

      • No it won’t! We survived the Bronze Age collapse and the post Roman dark ages. Even if only 0.01% of us survive, that’s still almost a million people. And 0.01% is a ridiculously extreme possibility

        • @ F.U. ( Ba ha!! )
I bet that’s what the many now extinct species of animal said until the last lonely one croaked.
The hyper riche are not going to let us filthy hoi polloi aka the lumpenproletariat aka the Great Unwashed drag them into extinction just because they, the hyper riche, have exploited us into an acquiescing malaise.
It’s my opinion [they’ll] already be working on a means of culling we, the masses. I mean, wouldn’t you in their position? They won’t want to destroy infrastructure with old fashioned bombs or that there, nor will they want to sully up the place with rotting dead bodies from gassings, bullets or poisons etc. They’ll want us to become sick seemingly ‘naturally’ thus avoiding close examination then to slowly die while handily burying ourselves as we go. I think the hyper riche will use genetically modified virus DNA designed to slowly evolve its lethality until its kill rate is 99.99%. They’ll watch the show from a moon base or an orbiting hotel of sorts. ‘Musk Towers’? ‘Club Bezos’? ‘ Just hop on Jeff’s cock rocket to the moon.
          Oh wait…? Oh fuck!

  1. Here’s a thing about pollution…
Shipping. Check out this website titled Marine Traffic. Pan out and be shocked at the levels of shipping traffic going on around the planet. Those tankers and freighters burn diesel measured in TONS. No liters.
Not only do they pollute the atmosphere but they pollute the oceans with oil residues and noise.
If there’s ever a convincing argument for the development of nuclear powered commercial shipping, this is it but shhhhhhh…. Don’t tell the oil barons that.

( Personally, I think nuclear-reactor generated electricity generally is a bizarrely good idea over fossil fuels. )

  2. Book; Bright Green Lies by Derrick Jensen. I requested the book through the Dunedin library, I just finished it and took it back.
Quote from the book, ‘ Is the point of the technology to help the earth, or is it to maintain this way of living at the expense of the earth?’

  3. The developing countries say “Well you in the West had your industrial revolution so now we are having ours”. Same thing applies to the greedy boomers. They polluted at will and profiteered from their land grabbing property collecting, natural resource exploitation. They had many kids who cause more pollution. They have set the planet up so the young cannot afford kids, houses, petrol, food. Why should the young sacrifice anything for anyone any more. They should just take, grab, use, exploit like their forebears and destroy the future even more if that is even possible. At least those who were not able to be given a leg up can drag down those that were, effectively destroying the boomers best laid plans of getting their sporn “ahead” and finally level up the playing field once and for all.

  4. When most of the planet is desert at least the corporates will sell have sand to sell to who ever is left alive. Those mansions under ground are going to be luxurious. Corporate evil will survive the climate emergency and sell it back as an opportunity to make money.

  6. well people I saw a podcast from an airline pilot three months ago telling about how he flew a Boeing 777 freighter from LA to UK carrying asparagus one way (90 tonnes) and fish back on return.
How many electric cars do we need import to offset the commercial activity we call globilisation. FFS 1000’s of planes pumping millions of tonnes of CO2 into atmosphere in the name of commerce. Maybe we need to take a step back and see the whole thing for what it is?

  7. NZ so busy on identity politics and marketing most of our media don’t bother reporting how our globalist strategy seems to be a failure with overseas and local firm ripping NZer’s off.

Not helping our trains or carbon footprint – continually encouraging polluters and exploiters to exploit NZ resources and people.

  8. and what are our sanctions against russia…any confiscated estates or assets, any seizures of funds, maybe closing the legal mechanisms that encourage dark money to slime here…nope none of the above but we’ll slap a 25percent surcharge on russian fertilisers..and we’re an agricultural economy..

let the oligarchs tremble and shake..NOT

  9. How do you think all those corporations make their money? From consumers buying their products! It doesn’t matter whether you blame the consumers or the corporations, it’s all the same products and lifestyle choices which are doing the damage

  10. Left blogs are full of numbnuts, Right, or rearing around. Rather than moderate and radical social democrats discussing things. We old NZers ignore the idiots who have forgotten from where they’ve come. I stop at Countryboy and Guerilla Surgeon. The spute of neoliberalism infectulating the truth of pre-1984. The last was right, the people’s govt needs to be in charge.
