National’s ridiculous new border controls evidence of a desperate Party grasping at straw polls

Oh for the love of Christ, THIS is just so stupid…

Covid 19 coronavirus: National wants everyone entering NZ to test negative first

The National Party wants Kiwis returning home from overseas to have tested negative for Covid-19 before being allowed in.

Leader Judith Collins released the party’s border policy this morning, which includes mandatory use of contact-tracing technologies – such as the Covid Card – for all overseas arrivals, border-facing workers and DHB staff who treat or test patients.

…clearly Farrar has told them that National are tanking and that all New Zealander’s want to hear is that the borders are closed hence this ridiculously unworkable and utterly unnecessary National Policy enforcing a test BEFORE people come to NZ.

It’s unnecessary because everyone coming into NZ gets tested and faces mandatory quarantine, forcing people to get tested before they come from countries that have problems with their testing regime while juggling flights that can get cancelled at any stage is a recipe for needless bureaucracy that will make things worse, not easier.

Also, a negative doesn’t mean you don’t have it! It’s that sneaky and you are going into quarantine anyway so why make the pre-test a prerequisite?

This is National grasping at straw polls with over the top policy that makes the resentful feel happier knowing someone else is made to suffer a bit before they are allowed into NZ.

It is such a dishonest joke for Judith to pull this stunt because while they are today crowing about having the most draconian border policy, remember National have flip flopped on the pandemic response with appalling regularity.

National originally demanded a shorter level 4 period, then wanted a shorter level 3 period, then leaked patient information to the media, then created a myth about a homeless man, then demanded we reopen the borders, then claimed Labour were scare mongering with masks and then created conspiracy theories

If you trust National to do the right thing now, you’ll believe anything.

This isn’t policy, it’s white noise with less charm.

In this Covid response, Im not looking for perfection from my Government, I’m looking for people who can adapt, learn & respond in real time with a true value to protect public health

I see that in Labour’s response

I see only dangerous game playing from National.

Final word to Russell Brown…

  1. Well, venture capital is going to have to approach The National Party about there desired use of Bluetooth technology if they want to foster good relationships with transnational corporations with the keys to unlock each device for a seamless tracing app. Because transnational corporations hate it when their technology can interface seamlessly with competitors.

The investment thesis is that contact tracing is a national security concern. According to Gresham’s law, it’s when people spend bad money and save good money and if you have a constant supply and increasing demand the price tends to go up. The opportunity to contact tracing is that it is a national security risk. This isn’t just about making some money. For me, it’s all about executing public health policy with the capabilities of our own by taking money from the crown and that is ultimately how government funds programmes and that does not benefit anyone but the people.

Having public health policy surrounded by innovation causes entrepreneurialism instead of rent-seeking behaviour.

  2. And poor “Doctor Shane” has to stand alongside and endure the stupidity. Is the good doctor now the new right hand man?

    • Shane seems like he’s a resonable guy, it’s just that National makes him look like an uncle Tom. Shane needs to distance himself from the current National leadership to retain any form of credibility.

      • He won’t, because, when all said and done, he’s a prig, and a bigot.. I’ve read some of his statements over the years, and if He’s the “sensible” one, then the nats are even deeper in the shit than I thought they were..

    • Kat: yes someone said that Shane Reti sounded sensible so Judith now has him by her side. ” see i have someone here who people say is sensible” . God she thinks we are dumb

  3. And who pays for the test before people get on the plane to come home. This will price too many NZers out of being able to come home. And who is paying for the tracking card or is that all inclusive with the ticket? Based on this policy National appear to be out of there league as consulting with the good Doctor Reti is one thing. The problem is he (Reti) is not an expert in disease control and outbreaks and that is why we have Epidemiologist. I work for Epidemiologist and they know there stuff, they are extremely hard working and professional. And the ones our Government have been consulting with are very good and very experienced they also work collaboratively with Epidemiologist from all over the world. I also work with a Nurse from Europe and this Nurse told me yesterday that too many NZers don’t know what is happening overseas because if they did they would realise how fortunate we are.

  7. I agree but for different reasons. This is as inspiring as a 3-day old turd in a lunchbox.

Too right people should have a test before they come to NZ. If you really want to come back into NZ one should have to take some personal responsibility and get a test. Not fool proof however lowers risk at no expense to the NZ taxpayer.

The balance of the policy is a sop to Labour and middle NZ who are still petrified this is the second coming of the plague thanks to alarmists such as the Pink Lady. For the record I don’t agree with taking a Swedish approach yet however at some stage we have to fess up to the fact elimination is not a viable long term option and take a managed position with a view to implementing a SAFE vaccine OVER TIME on an op in basis to at risk people.

Simple question – if you are under 50, no preexisting conditions and otherwise healthy (i.e. not obese etc) would you rather take a rushed vaccine where long term side effects are unknown or risk infection with covid19 where at least 95% (and probably 99%) haven’t exhibited any long-term health problems?

Ignoring the politics that’s the question that most governments are going to face in the next 12 months

    • “we have to fess up to the fact elimination is not a viable long term option ”

Why, because your medical background tells us so. No thanks we should stick to expert advice. Has kept us ahead of the rest of the world so far.

      • Ok Bertie – we’ll see where we are in 12 months. My shout if there isn’t widespread world acceptance that we will just have to deal with covid19 as opposed to an elimination crusade.

      • What is the point of taking a test 3 days before flying..you could catch it after that, you would still need to be quarantined here for 14 days and retested twice.
Its just a soundbite from National for the gullible that will achieve nothing.

        • The point is some personal responsibility and from a risk perspective – reduced risk. Sure you can catch it in transit however there is the same argument in quarantine at the moment – in fact there is ample evidence of that as we speak.

Of course in a true quarantine situation the chances are almost non-existent however under the super team of Diggers, St Ash, Megs and Squealer (i.e. Chippie) our quarantine system has become a game of Russian roulette.

          • Garbage Frank. You lost me at personal responsibility. Next, you’ll be calling for market driven solutions as the private sector is so much more efficient than Government.

          • And you think Collins and Brownlee with a herd mentality isn’t Russian roulette? Jesus wept Frankie, time to put the keyboard away.

You would also do yourself a favour by being respectful of peoples names.

            • Like you are being respectful of National MPs names?

And pray please provide a link to where Collins and/or Brownlee are arguing for herd immunity? Indeed any National MP would suit.

              • A bit sensitive there Frankie.

Collins and Brownlee vs “super team of Diggers, St Ash, Megs and Squealer (i.e. Chippie)”

Neither bright or mature are you Frankie.

      • bert. Isn’t it amazing how many expert epidemiologists have come out of New Zealand’s woodwork..or from under their rocks , to advise we ignorant plebs and real experts on what should be done to combat the virus. Honestly most of them wouldn’t know a virus if it lodged up their bum and shouted covefe. Dr Reti is National’s internationally renowned expert..at last.. they have someone who has some sort of qualification. Seems a decent sort of guy but he’s no Bloomfield or Faucii. But a vast improvement on Dr Brownlie and much better than Judith’s previous chief advisor, Dr Slater.

    • Hang on. You’re saying up to 95% of people infected are not exhibiting long term side effects when the virus has seemingly only been in NZ from March. What is your definition of long term?

  8. If National introduce such a force it may just morph into ‘Homeland Security’. What else could they be given to ‘control’? NZ Homeland Security staff crashing through peoples doors without warrants…. endless possibilities here too. But, yet another government department to run. But wait – National want to reduce expenditure / government control????? etc etc etc… ad nauseum……

  9. Ridiculous polity. An infection while in transit to NZ on an aircraft is a possibility, despite testing negative prior to departure. In such circumstances what is National’s plan for these people who then go on to return a positive CV-19 test on arriving in NZ? Not very well thought out.

    • 100% Mary this policy achieves little, but makes National look like they mean businesses. It was only a month ago they where demanding the borders to be opened, it’s difficult to know what their actual policies are.

    • I am not sure it is ridiculous. Let’s say 60-100 people (massive guess) have actually come across the border with the virus. I would think only 10-20% of these people caught the virus while travelling, more likely they had it before they travelled. If there was a policy of testing before travelling the number of actual positive cases coming into NZ would be significantly less therefore the chance of a security leak becomes much less.
There would still be the 3 & 12 day tests and the 14 day quarantine to pick up the cases transmitted while travelling. I think this policy just adds to the toolbox.

  10. So much for great new hope Reti-from-Harvard then. This proposed process is ridiculously superfluous when a negative tester may then proceed to pick up the virus en route.

Do these morons not realise how much thought we in the real world have given to what’s panning out ?

  11. If you look at the faces of all four Nats on stage, this would be their quote.

“I hope you mugs are buying this shit because it was the best we could come up with”.

In saying that, I do believe they have stumbled onto one good and reasonable point here. I think it’s perfectly reasonable in my opinion to demand all people coming into NZ have tested negative to Covid twice in the 14 days leading up to their journey. I’ve been saying that since the first day “kiwis” started returning from Covid hotspots. They should have to test negative by a reputable and trusted regime as a condition of coming to NZ. Without that we are ensuring we are importing the virus back into NZ just waiting for the next accident to happen. All it takes is one person to get through a hole in the defence and the rest of us are forced to pay an enormous price all over again. It’s a no brainer. No negative Covid tests, no approval to come to NZ…regardless of who you are or reason for coming here.

“CEAC Challenge National Require Visitors/Citizens Test All With Serology Antibody Covid 19 To Gold Standard”

    Dear Government MP’s and stakeholders.

Judith Collins is now promising to increase our border security by not allowing any visitors/citizens into NZ without a negative Covid test, but we are not confident that the single PCR (swab test) is the most accurate test to use for our health and safety, as the PCR test has been with 20% false negative and this fails “the gold standard”.

CEAC challenges National by requesting they also use the new gold standard requesting a “Serology Antibody Covid 19 To Gold Standard” as it has a 99.8% accuracy. The current PCR (Swab test) is far less accurate. See the Roche company press release when accepted by the FDA. (see below, along with our todays and previous last press release sent to you on this subject.)

Roche’s COVID-19 antibody test receives FDA Emergency Use Authorization and is available in markets accepting the CE mark
    • The serology test has a specificity greater than 99.8% and sensitivity of 100% (14 Days post-PCR confirmation)
    • The high specificity of the test is crucial to determine reliably if a person has been exposed to the virus and if the patient has developed antibodies
    • Roche will provide high double-digit millions of tests already in May for countries accepting the CE mark and in the U.S. under Emergency Use Authorization, further ramping up capacities thereafter
    • The test is available on Roche’s cobas e analysers which are widely available around the world
Basel, 03 May 2020 – Roche (SIX: RO, ROG; OTCQX: RHHBY) today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA)1 for its new Elecsys® Anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody test. The test is designed to help determine if a patient has been exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus and if the patient has developed antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. Roche has already started shipping the new antibody test to leading laboratories globally and will ramp up production capacity to high double-digit millions per month to serve healthcare systems in countries accepting the CE mark2 as well as the U.S.

“Thanks to the enormous efforts of our dedicated colleagues we are now able to deliver a high-quality antibody test in high quantities, so we can support healthcare systems around the world with an important tool to better manage the COVID-19 health crisis,” said Severin Schwan, CEO Roche Group. ”I am in particular pleased about the high specificity and sensitivity of our test, which is crucial to support health care systems around the world with a reliable tool to better manage the COVID-19 health crisis.”

“Our best scientists have worked 24/7 over the last few weeks and months to develop a highly reliable antibody test to help fight this pandemic,” said Thomas Schinecker, CEO Roche Diagnostics. “Roche is committed to helping laboratories deliver fast, accurate, and reliable results to healthcare professionals and their patients.”

Roche’s SARS-CoV2 antibody test, which has a specificity greater than 99.8% and 100% sensitivity3 (14 Days post-PCR confirmation), can help assess patients’ immune response to the virus. As more is understood about immunity to SARS-CoV-2, the test may help to assess who has built up immunity to the virus.

    CEAC – Response.
TVNZ Q+A Professor Blakely stated clearly that all who are in contact with our borders, including the Ports must be tested fully for present infections with the PCR (swab test) and if the infection was over two weeks ago, he recommends testing with the serology antibody test for finding any past infections after two weeks.
Dr Blakely reminded Jack Tame that the PCR (Swab test) was not “perfect” and 20% failed to be accurate, showing false negative results after two weeks out from infection. This was Dr Blakely’s reason for recommending the serology antibody test as well was to have complete accurate results.
Ministry of Health clearly should be doing this now or we risk the case that we do not have adequate data to understand ‘how and why’ the latest community Covid cluster has emerged this week, so they are concentrating at the cold store site where containers are transported by trucks, CEAC assume all drivers are tested, – If not we must now test all our freight transport drivers and incorporate this with the current ‘swab test’- and “the antibody test (also called a serology test.) which confirm all who develop immunity to Covid 19 for true accurate test results.
    Be cautious Government.
Government must require that a full Covid 19 testing of all visitors/citizens complete a full negative test assessment of any presence of Covid 19 infections using both the PCR (swab test) and the serology antibody test at least 48hrs before arriving at NZ’s border.
We must have mass testing of all our community firstly then use a solid controlled ‘tracing of the Covid 19’ to have a ‘robust tracing process’ to fight Covid 19.
Do this right. – We are all in this together.

  13. She also spewed out quite a few lies over there and the fucking media never calls her on them, but with the Government, they nitpick and attack constantly. Collins is delusional and actually needs to see a shrink to deal with her narcissism and sociopath personality.

    • Paulinator, yes.
NZ media / journos: When Ms Collins is doing her mischief they’re like this.

Then when Dr Bloomfield, the Health Minister, the PM etc, those who are actually doing the work round the clock to get us through this pandemic, when they take valuable time out to report back to us then those same media-innocents explode into a pack of marauding macaques.

    • Collins is delusional

She is also a liar, and has NOT been cleared of the allegations in Nicky Hager’s book, despite her claim. Read about it here: Nicky Hager on Judith Collins and the book Dirty Politics, TDB 15th July 2020

The actions of a person who variously held the offices of Minister for Justice, Minister for Police and Corrections Minister, are at odds with any sense of respect for those roles, or of responsibility for those roles. There remains a residual stench of corruption. By allowing her to lead the National Party in any way shape or form, the Party itself is wearing that residual corruption.

  14. Methinks National are staring self-destruction in the face and know they are not suitable for votes.
And so they create attention seeking antics(juvenile and ridiculous as most of them are)just to be in the tv cameras vision.
I have said this before and I will say it again. National Party MPs are Empty Vessels. along with lacking empathy, compassion and caring they also lack morals, credibility, honesty and truthfulness.
The way they are behaving at every opportunity proves to me that they will probably be in for a shattering time on election day.
Go Team Jacinda at the election. And make sure National get the Karmic Payback they have long deserved probably ever since they came into existence and put money ahead of people

  15. Nationals COVID Policy. It really bullshit, just by another name.

    A Border Protection Agency – hmm…

    Who will man it?
What skills are required and are best suited?
Do we have the skills here and now?
    What Ministry will oversee it?
Who will coordinate the formation and training?
    What is its mandate?
What laws does it operate under, i.e. what legislation is this model based on?
What powers will it need and how do you go about putting that into law?
What budget does it operate from?
    What is its budget?
Does mean robbing Peter to pay Paul?
And exactly how long to get the above up and running properly? I’m guessing 3 years easy and then some.
Will this be 100% full proof?
Will our vacant media even ask any of these questions?

It’s real easy to trot out the term “Border Protection Agency” but backing it up with any kind of substance, nope, sorry, we have NO idea. Is this seriously the best National can do? FFS!

    Covid test overseas.

    Who vets that?
What agency overseas does that and can it be trusted?
How can at test result be confirmed to not be fraudulent?
    Who does quality assurance control?
Only one test? Doesn’t this virus get missed on one test only at times?
How long will it take for this regime to be up and running and be 100% reliable? Months, years, ever?
What about infection in transit? How does a prior test satisfy that risk?

Airy fairy reactionary empty words by a political party that hates each other.

    • X-ray – “Hates each other”? Brownlee looks scared stiff in this photo, and the little blond bloke on his left is rather worried looking too. They can’t even manage a decent looking photo shoot.

    • “Who will man it?”
Based on Natz past actions, a private security firm like Serco.
And we all know how that’ll work out!

      • Agree with you there Tony.
I am also thinking if there is a National government(God forbid)and a security firm is bought in will it be owned by a former National MP and so National would give the contract to that ‘security company’ on the proviso that some of the NZ taxpayers money is channeled into the NZ National Party bank accounts in back-handers?
I don’t trust National because they come across as a “Holier than Thou” lot who have failed abysmally with dealing admirably in events like Cave Creek, The Canterbury Quakes, Pike River, The Rena.etc, etc.etc.
Besides they would probably raise GST to 17% if they had half the chance.

          • Especially on FOOD!
It is madness to have these long lines of people desperately queuing for food parcels, yet the govt still taxes that food every step of the way through growing, production, distribution, collection, then tax the food itself!! Even cuzzy Aussies are not THAT stupid. Even the UK with their millions of people don’t do that. Yes we have this mean, stupid, cruel tax, even while people are desperately hungry. Even while we ourselves as a nation are producing that food! It is a crime.

            • @Kheala. When I worked in the UK, there was no VAT charged on kids’ clothes, or on the toiletries, cleansers, disinfectants etc which we really need to be using fairly meticulously now; I can’t remember what else, but GST on food in a country of primary producers, is morally criminal. And then the health pundits bleat about the dangers of the effects of poor nutrition when there are some simple answers close at hand.

  16. Aaah, one hears LOTS of left wing protest. Clearly it’s a good policy!
I know why you guys are all protesting – Labour didn’t come up with. And there is the truth.

    • Neither did National, it is a policy that is already in place with Emirates Airlines as of the 1st of August and soon to be adopted by other airlines. So as usual National is behind the ape ball and reduced to grabbing policies from anywhere they can find.

      • I have noticed about National is they are expert at Copying and Pasting policies from other countries.
Maybe their inability to come up with home-grown policies is because they aren’t a bright bunch when all things considered.
They will however always chime on to the point of nausea of how they would have done things better than anyone else.
But if we had a National government I am sure the death toll from COVID-19 would be considerably higher here in NZ than it currently is.

    • Dream on Herman;

You are smart enough to know this policy is just a ‘smoke screen’ – and already it has been attacked as a case being sent to the ‘UN human rights’ as a model to show ‘National intend to breach the UN Human Rights code’ – so you are stuffed there sorry..

    • right on HSR. The Nat policy should have been implemented from the beginning. The MOH can barely administer the DHBs properly. An independent body that can focus on the vital decisions that will need to be made is a great idea in my opinion. User pays and gets tested.

    • A good policy for M-Bovis like National had Herman. Damien O’Connor from Labour luckily stepped in. No the National policy is so poorly thought out I’m more than happy for you to have it.

      • True that was Bert perhaps the Nats like Herman and ‘new view’ have a bad memory or Alzheimer’s ???

  17. If national party supporters are wondering what AO/NZ would be like had national been the government as c-19 spread just look at the U$A?
trump’s a fake. That’s why he’s in such trouble. He’s like an orange zombie second hand car salesperson that knows nothing about cars but he loves to get his little orange fingers on the money.
And collins is a fake. She’s no idea what she’s talking about and when pushed she thinks hissing and spitting will be seen as someone in control.
Collins and The Big Jizzo think they’re so, so awesome while the cynical mopes at either end are along for the $ix figure plus entitlements and retirement perks by riding on collins and jizz’s coat tails. What a view that must be, aye boys?
national are fakes and flakes but perhaps most chilling of all, they’re gleefully vicious and narcissistic.
And dumb! I nearly forgot dumb. They’re dumb as. Dumb, ugly and nasty.
Farmers? Pull down their hoardings in your paddocks. You’re embarrassing yourselves even more than you already do.
Specifically by taking less than a dollar a kg for your wool. I mean? Sooooooooooooo embarrassing. I saw a NZ wool cable stitch fashion jersey in a fashion show in The Guardian a while back for £700.00
How much would a nice jersey weight? About 700 grams?
Isn’t that about .70 cents worth of wool? Less than, in fact. That’s a 2000% mark up on a $1400.00 NZ wool jersey. Is that right?? I’m a bit shit with maths. And doesn’t it cost about $3.00 to shear a sheep? And that’s just to pay the shearer. That doesn’t include their winter feed, drench, crutching and dipping of the animal. Then there’s the labour costs for lambing and crutching etc. You sheep farmers literally pay others to take your animal’s wool away to make fortunes with while you’re left slogging your guts’s out in isolation and fear?
Does that not make you go ” Hey? Hang on a minute…? What the fuck! ”
And you have national party hoardings dutifully propped up in your sheep paddocks?
While I’m no accountant I’d say those figures are embarrassing for you sheep farmer people.
The word ‘Sucker’ hardly covers it.
And if you think that, that kind of swindling stops at wool, think again. There’s the apple and pear marketing board, the meat board and the dairy board. Then there’s fishes, timbers, Deer, Pot, ( Oh? Wait? Sorry. Not yet.)
The dirty natzo’s have their sticky little trump-esque fingers in every one of our lovely pies while trading us as slaves to foreign banksters for their $6 billion dollar net profits. ( Apols of the use of the word ’slave’ causes offence.)
The national party are indefencibly corrupt and have been sucking on us for generations and generations.
I had a great idea a little while ago! How about we scant few 5 million people crowd source a fund to pay for a team of private investigators to go through the natzo’s like a spoon full of magnesium sulphate?
Wouldn’t that make good reading on TDB? I reckon it would.

    • Well country boy you seem t know fuck all about farming. The wool garments you will be talking about are made from fine wool. The farmers able to grow that from Marino sheep in the South Island high country and are well paid. Crossbred wool can only be grown on the lowlands and in the north island. It’s coarser and worth fuck all. Those farmers grow their sheep for meat. For someone called country boy you’re about as country as spit on the footpath in Queen street.

  18. Emirates have such a testing regime in place as from the 1st August and other airlines are soon to follow suit. The passenger is responsible for organising their own testing no earlier than 90 hours before the flight and present an official document signed by a medical practitioner on boarding the flight. This is all done at the not inconsiderable expense to the traveller. So National Party its not a new idea, just one they nicked and already in operation. As usual National is behind the ape ball.

  19. What happens when a kiwi who has been trying to get home since March, finally cops a seat on a flight that isn’t cancelled, queues up to get on the plane then tests positive for covid 19?

What method does Collins plan to use to trample over his/her constitutional rights as a kiwi citizen?
Last time I looked being sick wasn’t a crime & not even the zionist government of Occupied Palestine – the worst ersatz democracy out there, makes citizens stateless for being ill. Even they insist on the pretense of a crime eg being ‘an Arab’ in an area some zionist greedy covets, before stripping a citizen of their citizenship and tossing her/him over the wall into Gaza.
What wall does Judith plan on tossing these ‘bad kiwis’ who have had the sheer nerve to get sick, over?

Hmm, she hasn’t thought that one through just as she hasn’t considered the reaction of whatever government the kiwi is trying to get away from, there is no way they will allow the kiwi to stay in their nation once they twig what Aotearoa is trying to pull, so what happens then Collins?

    • Yes @debsisdead good points about the sick and infirm. I have noticed how little empathy is out there for those who have Covid 19. All I hear is Ban them, Stop them, etc etc. Where the fuck is humanity? We are talking about Kiwi’s who live in Aotearoa. IMHO we should get them home and treat them, fix them up, look after them. They are people just like us. Surely we can test, track and trace, isolate and all rest of it. If we stop them even getting on the plane, then they are in no-mans land. We treat animals better.

  20. Silly me, I thought their border protection policy was to put Gerry at the beach to stop the tide coming in.

    • Gerry is more of a Janos Slynt – a corrupt official fleeing his record of failure – than the shield that guards the realms of men. Even his colleagues are disgusted by him.

  21. Did you hear seee -more on RNZ this morning, based on his interview he hasn’t done his homework and he was trying to bluff his way through the interview with Corin Dann. He wants us to use B & Bs for quarantine and he wants us to monitor people with ankle bracelets. Maybe judeath can taser them and see- more can use his gun nuts as a firing squads to line the virus people up and shoot them with their AK47s.

  22. Collins hasn’t twigged that most ‘western’ governments are as venal and morally corrupt as she wants to make Aotearoa. If this horror story of an insanely cruel Act of parliament did pass, I guarantee the fascist regimes in England, US & Australia which also love getting the arsehole voters on side, will pass a law that any kiwi who tests positive for Covid 19 be deported. Why wouldn’t they? Their own loudmouths will go ape when word gets out about the stroke the kiwis have pulled.
Collins is basically telling them that any citizen of Aotearoa who catches covid must stay where they are, feeding off another nation’s health system & infecting another nation’s citizens.
The result of this dog whistle legislation will be many more covid infected arrivals as many kiwis may well have decided to stay put but got deported, so far greater health costs, accommodation charges etc.

Of course that is nothing. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t believe there has ever been a ‘let’s get the ignorant, prejudiced and selfish types on side with a dog whistle bill” that hasn’t been chocka full of all sorts of unintended consequences & costs.
