The pro gun lobby argument to date has been, ‘gun owners are all good so why should there be any extra scrutiny on poor old us with gun registers and extra oversight’.
Well because apparently not all those with gun licenses are in fact all good…
10,000 gun licence holders have convictions for violence or sexual offending
One in ten firearms licence holders have a criminal conviction, including 10,000 for violent and sexual offending, Stuff can reveal.
The figures reinforce the need for stricter gun control, New Zealand Police Association president (NZPA) Chris Cahill said.

Owning a gun is a privilege, it’s not a right, just like owning a car is a privilege and not a right. There are a whole bunch of regulations placed in car owners, just as there should be on gun owners.
There is nothing egregious in these suggestions, yes there are some issues around warrantless searches, but those were already in place before this new update.
As a country we won’t tolerate the ease of civilians owning machine guns again and we will monitor those who have them far more effectively than in the past.
This snowflake routine of victimisation gun owners are embarrassingly trotting out is beneath us all.
Gun regulation is happening, accept it.

However apparently if you have a gun licence the proposed law change is to allow the police to search your house/car/person without a warrant!
How hard is it, to get a search warrant? Search warrants should be required to search somebodies house.
And how many people will now have illegal guns because of that law change and you have the licensed gun owners able to be searched if they have legal guns and illegal gun owners still needing a search warrant?
It’s a stupid law change because it will make things worse and stop people licensing their guns when criminals who have illegal guns have more rights than people who do the right thing and are licensed, so sending the wrong messages.
Remember NZ is a rural country and so many people with guns have legitimate reasons for it but do they want the police to just be able to search their house without a search warrant?
Also police are not above corruption and clearly the gangs are keen to recruit police! So there is a lack of rigorous process in the law, with any police officer able to search someones house at a whim if they own a gun license.
One of the many NRA style talking points in defence of resisting NZs firearms law changes ,,, and in support of NZs Military style weapons hold outs ,,, is the Christchurch’s massacre was an Australian problem ,,, an overseas person problem.

Regarding overseas owners possibly hoarding Military style weapons here in NZ ,,, I would imagine usa survivalists with their strong gun culture would be worth a look ,,, especially those adhering to society collapse and Sovereign citizens type manifestos ,,,,,,With them rising to be Lords and little Kings here in their NZ bolt holes ….
Surely these usa survivalists have weapons to protect their NZ lands, food, and other resources they have built or hoarded….

You actually have the right to own a car, you have the privilege to drive it on a public road under licence but the state has no authority to refuse ownership of a vehicle to any person.
