SPECIAL INVESTIGATION: Arthur Taylor: Time for more than building upgrades at Waikeria Prison

1. Yes I agree with you Arthur no good fixing the buildings and making them fit for purpose (superficial fix) when we still have the same old has beens running the place. We have the same problem out here in government agencies some of the high paid state servants are past their use by date and aren’t fit for purpose if we really want to see a reduction in incarceration rates we need to bring in new people to run our prisons and other government agencies.

3. Absolute stupidity they did not take up Arthur Taylor offer to present at the justice summit. Clearly if they want to reform prisons maybe they need to look at the views of the prisoners. Clearly too many petty and power plays going on in that sector, and the actual prison officers seem to need a bit of reform along with their charges!

   As for that dismal cell picture, looks hideous not sure how much rehab would occur if you lived there for a decade.

   They need to go through and mend the processes that are stupid.

   The other day the $350 payment they give people leaving prison was refused because apparently you have to go to WINZ and then go to the right offices of WINZ etc. Just give the people leaving prison their money in cash or open them a bank account that they can draw on when they leave prison. Clearly most people will need the money straight away!
