A Goth Opera Cabaret?

I’m there.

Basement Theatre maintains its crown as the best venue in Auckland for experimental theatre that really does manage to change perspective with The Winterreise Project.

A woman who worked on the Hillary Clinton campaign reflects on the horror and shock of Trump’s win by retreating into the world of Schubert.

Operatic German sung in a Cabaret setting with Gothic makeup manages to transport you immediately to 1930s Berlin and the shock of progressives at the rise and rise and rise of Hitler. That same shockwave with Trump creates a tension of suddenly stepping into the shadows with only a hint at the evil that darkness hides.

Frances Moore as the lead, Alex Taylor as the director and writer, Joshua Wilson’s lighting and Justin Gregory’s production and writing assemble to create a spine tingling experience that is deeply emblematic of where we stand culturally and politically right now.
