Shock announcement, Peter Dunne has quit politics…

Peter Dunne quits politics

United Future leader Peter Dunne is quitting politics, in a shock announcement made today.

Dunne cited recent polling for his decision to quit politic after more than three decades.

The current political environment is extremely volatile and unpredictable,” he said in a statement.

“However, I have concluded, based on recent polling, and other soundings I have been taking over the last few weeks, that, the volatility and uncertainty notwithstanding, there is now a mood amongst Ōhāriu voters for a change of MP, which is unlikely to alter.”

…politically this is damaging to National who lose one possible coalition partner if Greg O’Connor can maximise on this for Labour.

I say good riddance to bad rubbish.

This was the man who sold his vote to John Key to pass controversial spying legislation even though his own emails had been caught by mass surveillance when his correspondence with Andrea Vance was investigated.

At the time Dunne described the deal of selling his vote to Key to pass mass surveillance powers as a ‘willing buyer, willing seller’.

Beyond that, he voted down the Feed the Kids Bill and his spiteful decision to make Helen Kelly a criminal when she died by refusing to sign off on her cannabis medicine was surely the low point in the political life of a bureaucrat who sold out and mutilated any meaningful legacy.

When NZ needed a check and balance to mass surveillance laws, Peter Dunne rolled over and sold us out. When he had the opportunity to show Helen Kelly compassion, he refused.

Good riddance Peter Dunne.

  1. If National weren’t shitting bricks already, they are now. The gravy train is grinding to a halt. Everyone off.

    • So right that is, – Like rats all deserting the sinking ship.

“The mist is slowly rising from this country after 9 bad, long years.”

Bless you Jacinda you are already a legend. – @weloveJacinda. xxxxxxxxx

  2. Shit I will miss the mop of clownish hair in Parliament ha ha.

He is responsible for more deaths and Addiction to drugs than any other MP except Bill English with his tightly controlled slow bleeding of the middle class and his liking for attrition and austerity.

Good bye Peter & Take Joyce, Collins, Paula, Amy and Bill with you so we can all breathe better and start to repair the mess you all left us in.

  3. Well I did not see that one coming, pretty interesting turn of events.

Will United Future still be able to attend the minor party debate?

  4. heh, our bowtied hero was a Rogernome who then proceeded to go even badder! set a new low bar for opportunism in Parliamentary politics, and that is some achievement…

  5. What would have happened if he had resigned mid term. Given that his seat is an overhang seat, would there still have been a bye election.

  6. Glad to see the back of him – to me his legacy will be youth drying on the streets from synthetic cannabis.

  7. Brarvo ! The National ice sheet is breaking up under Jacinda climate change .

Peter Dunne held the casting vote 61 /60 to defeat the Fighting Foreign Corporations Bill which would have removed the right for large multinational corporations to sue our govt under international trade agreements.Including the TPPA .

If this bill had succeeded it would have stopped TPP dead in its tracks in NZ . When poised on a knife edge with 70% of Kiwis not wanting TPP, Peter Dunnes casting vote was crucial to National and their corporate overlords.

In doing this he instantly became the judas who sold his country out , the man who sold our sovereignty to allow a transition from Democracy to Corporateocracy ; I for one am very happy he is gone .

What will the organ grinder do now he doesn’t have his monkey ?

    • Perhaps that tidy little bit of voting by Dunny can be rescinded when Labour comes to power in September, – it certainly is going to be an anachronism of sorts when Labour , Greens and NZ First came out originally against the TTPA particularly the Investor State Dispute Settlement.

    • Labour under Little buckled under the TTP propaganda. Will they be any different under she of porcine lippie? That’s why the moral vote is for Green.

    • good riddance to mr dunn, hes lived on the taxpayers tit for 33yrs.been a political prostitute for labour and the nats and a self appointed party leader of himself.once again —good riddance

  8. I would have liked to have seen him dragged down slowly slowly, but not by that ex cop guy who I loathe.

    • I didn’t must like the ex-cop until I heard him on national radio on the panel and he sounded quite sane. He would be quite a good minister of police because he knows all the police tricks to get around the minister and he knows where police really need the money.

  9. Couldn’t agree more Martyn, like John key he saw defeat coming so did a runner. Good bloody riddance to that piece of garbage that has blood on its hands. Furious though that the likes of key, Dunne and others have gotten away with their crimes against this country and people.

    • I wouldn’t mind betting Louis, a knighthood could be next on the agenda for Dunne. You know, like Jon kee un, for services to treachery!

      • HELL BELLS Mary I never thought of that angle!!! I couldn’t stomach it when that lying criminal shyster got knighted when he should have been charged with treason, as you have aptly pointed out, but Dunne? OH it’s just one insult too much..ugh…I cant bring myself to even think of it….

  10. So long Peter.
Thanks for propping up one of the most brazenly corrupt governments in New Zealand’s political history.
I hope helping to sell off our children’s birthright hasn’t been too hard on you.
    Have a sensible retirement.

  11. Most if not all party leaders have been diplomatic in their praise of Dunne until I read this…

“Act leader David Seymour tweeted Dunne was a “symbol and enabler of how our major parties drift with no real agenda”, and had enjoyed ministerial cars and perks when the housing crisis began under Helen Clark and continued under National.

“He has been swept out by the tidal change against do-nothing politics,” Seymour wrote.”

I say “The pot calling the kettle black”

Now I may be wrong but the housing “crisis” has occurred under Act’s coalition with National, Seymour forgot to mention that.

Seymour, the same person responsible for outing Meteria.
Nasty vile young boy, him next!

  12. He didn’t leak the story to Andrea Vance so she had the heads up on the story.

Another bit of history that people forget.

    • He has gyred and gimbled with our privacy, alcohol, tobacco and drug laws wabe far too long.

All of english’s men will not put him back together again.

Labour and Greens could have pushed humpty and broken his shell party years ago but for their stupidity in rivaling each other.

      That has cost us dearly.

  13. A pointless tart of a politician. I never understood what he (or the United Future Party) actually stood for – apart from raking in ministerial salaries. Will not be missed. Go Labour!

  14. Fantastic news. Never understood his “appeal”. Still you have to ask why Dunne and Key quit before this election. Usually the rats bail a sinking ship first.

  15. Finally, the Dunney has been flushed! A shame it took the threat of Greg O’Connor to oust him, when Charles Chauvel could have done it an election or two ago if he hadn’t been packed off by the ABCs. Like running against Hone in Te Tai Tokerau, this was one of a series of poor choices by Labour strategists that kept them on the opposition benches far longer than they needed to be.

Careful examination of Dunne’s record in parliament show that he was and remains a committed Rogernome, as well as being in the pockets of a number of corporate lobbies including the road transport industries, the alcohol and tobacco industries, and the pharmaceutical industry. Flushing Key, Goff, Shearer, and Shearer out of parliament were good first steps towards getting rid of the horde of self-serving corporate lackies that have dominated parliament for decades, and flushing out Dunne is an excellent second step.

    • Well put .

I remember that worm. I remember the ‘ family values’ . I remember the consternation at seeing Dunny contradict those values time and again with not only supporting , – but gleefully endorsing neo liberal economics knowing full well it was to the detriment of working people and their family’s.

Glad to see the rear end of that Benedict Arnold .

      Another Rogernome bites the dust.

Seems the ‘ purge’ is what I suspected will happen , – not by deliberation but by natural attrition.

      We’ll get there.

  16. Dirty little Dunne saw the writing on the wall and quit, to save himself the embarrassment of conceding defeat to Labour’s Greg O’Connor next month!

After this little blow, I bet the Natz rat pack will be dusting off their CV’s, all ready to be sent off for directorships, preparing for when the big loss comes! Could be a long queue guys! No doubt Dr Sir Johnny what’s-his-name will have his grubby fingers in a few pies, at the ready to help out his corrupt co conspirators!

I sense a big change is coming, a much bigger one than we dared to anticipate 🙂

  17. Never liked the look of the King of Synthetic Kannabis and wouldn’t have a clue what they were about ?

    • That synthetic chemical stuff is more toxic by far than tobacco or weed for fucks sake, Peter Dunne has real blood on his hands the toxic killer.

Labour had better ban all this toxic synthetic chemical shit quick fast.

  18. Good riddance – Seymour next – then the rest of the stains on this country – some accountability for all the corrupt wheeling and dealing would also be nice.. ‘A’ Mr Key!

  19. I’m loyal to the blue team, but here I celebrate with friend and foe from the left. PRobably for different reasons, but the end result is the same. And democracy will be better for the demise of the self important pretender who will go left or right as long as he gets a seat at the table.

Now I look forward to the race between O’Connor and Hudson. Friends were so over Dunne they were going to support O’Connor, but now will support Hudson safe in the knowledge that Dunne has gone. I wonder if this is now a 50/50 race, or does O’Connor have the head start to take this seat. ( which I think is likely outcome -but by a nose)

    • Another John Key trick out of the box is part of the deal:

      http://www.newshub.co.nz/general/mps-pensions-to-remain-untouched-2011051309

“Finance Minister Bill English told media yesterday the Government was not looking at changing the MPs’ superannuation scheme.

Under the scheme, MPs are entitled to a subsidy of up to 20 percent of their salary, receiving $2.50 for each dollar they save.

MPs who entered Parliament before 1992, when the parliamentary super scheme changed, receive a subsidy equal to 23 percent of their gross salary. ”

No wonder Dunne was so loyal to Key and English.

    • I must say how astonishingly well Peter Vomit Dunne looked after himself …

How badly he cared for New Zealanders. Mr Toad of Toad Hall.

  20. Good to see the end of the “free seat for National” scam by electorate seat that was perpetrated in Ohariu.
Loss of Dunne means Nats need another roughly 20,000 party votes to maintain equivalence they got from Dunne’s electorate seat – they’ve got to earn them the way every other party does.

  21. Dunne didn’t quit with or for nothing. If his mates (the gnats) get back in for his loyalty he will be rewarded a knighthood and a cushy posting.
Reminds me of that song theres a rat in the kitchen and that rat is bill

  22. He might well have been quite a good electorate MP for Ohariu, but in over 30 years of service he has never risen above mediocrity or made a significant contribution to New Zealand.
He has simply marked time, leaning with the wind in whatever political direction it has blown.
He has sensed the obvious, people want a real MP now, not just a National Party seat warmer.
