  1. SIN CITY GOES SOLAR!

    Who’d of thunk it.

At this stage it seems that this initiative only applies to public buildings and street lighting. (Not the casinos)

    Still…..

In my opinion it would still be good, if other cities followed this initiative. At the very least, it would be a start.

For instance there is no reason why Auckland couldn’t do this.

For a start the Mayor and council could start by banning all outside illuminated advertising bill boards and lighting displays powered from the mains.

Mark my words; Advertisers desperate to peddle their wares, would quickly switch to renewables to power their night-time light displays and bill boards. (and at no cost to the council, or rate-payers).

Other initiatives would be to ban multistory office blocks from leaving their lights on all night, just for the cleaners. Instead mandate that the cleaning be done during daylight hours. There may even be social benefits. The deleterious health effects of shift work on those who do it are well recognised. Such and initiative may even help engender a better respect and tolerance for the cleaning staff from the daytime office workers if they learned to work around each other cooperatively.
(Again, as well as delivering many benefits, such a bylaw would represent zero cost to the rate-payer and council).

And why, if Sin City can do it, why can’t Auckland’s public street lighting be switched to solar?

    Afterall….

The council, (without any consultation with the public, or ratepayers), are spending $10 million of the public’s money outfitting the Auckland Harbour bridge with a frivolous solar powered multi-coloured lighting display.

Wouldn’t this money be better, (and more practically) spent, extending this concept to public street lighting, as Las Vegas has done?

  2. Good point Pat,

Maybe you can contact this brave young girl who has more guts than our PM’s it seems.

Government being sued over climate targets
From Jesse Mulligan, 1–4pm, 1:15 pm on 25 May 2017

A Hamilton law graduate is going to the High Court, to take on the Government’s policy on climate change.
It’s thought to be the first case of its kind in New Zealand.
The move by 26-year-old Sarah Thomson wasn’t initially taken that seriously, with John Key dismissing the case as a “joke”.
But the case is going to the Wellington High Court next month.

  3. Brutal thug, Martin Van Beynen, advocates hosing the homeless and destitute off our streets.

“We need to get beggars off the streets. We really do and if we have to hose them off the footpaths then so be it.”

    Martin Van Beynen

    THE PRESS, June 2, 2017

If I doused Martin Van Beynen with cold water he would have me for assault.

    And rightly so.

But, I can remember a time, (not so long ago), when there were no beggars on the streets of New Zealand cities. And it was not because of threats of assault from nasty right wing goons like Martin Van Beynen.

And what is Martin Van Beynen’s main complaint against the homeless and destitute?

That they expose an uncomfortable truth that he doesn’t want to acknowledge.

“The worst thing about beggars clogging the footpaths is that they portray signs of chaos and destitution.”
