The MSD have responded to TDBsย question posed yesterday…
I have put to the Ministry of Social Development this morning about rumours The Daily Blog are hearing out of Tauranga about beneficiaries being threatened with benefit cuts if they donโt sign legally questionable contracts for the very same fruit picking industry that is currently abusing these migrant workers.
…MSD have responded with this statement…
We work with beneficiaries in Tauranga and elsewhere across the country to ensure they receive what they are entitled to. Work and Income only refers people to employers whose job offers are legitimate and where the contract terms and conditions meet current employment legislation. Our staff are available to offer work advice where needed.
…next week TDBย will publish one of the employment contracts that beneficiaries are being forced to signย and we will come back to this statement by MSD then.

Keep us posted, please, what is “within the law” when it comes to employment agreements is rather appalling anyway, as I see and hear daily.
