Dear Mr Dunne: a statement from a Pike River widow – Stand With Pike

Peter Dunne’s statements about the evidence for safe re-entry of the Pike River drift is exactly the kind of uninformed politicking he claims he is rejecting, says Pike River family member Anna Osborne.

In his open letter to US President Donald Trump, Mr Dunne says, “[Politicians] share your distaste of science and evidence because it can be awkward. We have some calling for the reopening of a mine where 29 men died so tragically over six years ago, even though all the evidence says the mine is still unstable and unsafe to enter.”

Anna, who lost her husband Milton in the disaster, says, “I get that he’s trying to come across as ‘sensible’, but he’s clearly failed to get some basic facts right here.

“For a start, we’re not talking about re-entering the mine. We’re talking about re-entering the drift – a 2.3km tunnel that leads to the mine. That’s an extremely important distinction.

“Mr Dunne also seems to have missed the expert reports we have provided, which have been presented to Parliament, that show safe re-entry of the drift can be done. I’m happy to send him copies if he wants.

“I also assume he wasn’t listening when a statement from the former New Zealand Chief Mines Inspector that the drift can be safely re-entered was read out in Parliament.

“I encourage Mr Dunne to educate himself about what the evidence actually shows, before his ignorance causes any further distress to the families of the men we lost in that mine. I welcome him to join us at select committee on 16 February to do so.”

  1. Mr Dunne should be done we need to get rid of politicians like him who has rode the gravy train for far too long.
We have these twits in Ohariu Belmont who keep voting for him when he needs to be put out to pastures, add Mc Cully and Gerry the bully to the list and they have a bloody cheek to talk about people having a sense of entitlement hypocrites!

  2. I don’t think Dunne actually gives a toss whether entering the drift is safe or not. He’s desperate to get re-elected by the delusional voters of Ohariu Belmont, and as such he’ll say whatever he feels he needs to say in order to expedite that process. He’s an opportunist muppet who simply takes up space, and he should be binned at the first available opportunity.

  3. Peter Dunne is pathetic and stupid. He has free-loaded on the NZ taxpayers for far too many years. Why his electorate keeps voting for him truly beggars belief?!
It’s election year and quite obviously Peter Dunne is getting panicky that his days of free-loading on others is nearing to an end.
And so in attempt to give the naive and gullible voters in his electorate the misleading impression he is a MP for the people he writes a stupid letter to the new POTUS.
Lets face reality here. Dunne is feeble. He is no good as an MP and it’s time he was dumped. But he is ONLY in the job as MP for the pay packet and the perks of the job. If say 29 National MPs were killed in one place at the same time he would be insisting that the date of the event be a public holiday.
Dunne is a shallow and empty person. I am just so over hearing about this ridiculous excuse of a MP in the news.

  4. Dunne is just as ignorant on the subject of medical marijuana. He’s just as ignorant as the people in the US he’s accusing. Sheesh.

  5. Look. This is how you do it. Get a large bunch of burly fellows together, go find dunne, drag him out of your government offices and kick his arse onto the street. Then, you go to the mine with some gear and get your people out of that awful hole. If people die in the process, then they died trying. It’s that simple. Direct action is required to rid us of a costly fool. Otherwise, he’ll be there for years and nothing good will come of it.
