IT WAS A POWERFUL piece of technology created for an important customer. The Medusa system, named after the mythical Greek monster with snakes instead of hair, had one main purpose: to vacuum up vast quantities of internet data at an astonishing speed.
The technology was designed by Endace, a little-known New Zealand company. And the important customer was the British electronic eavesdropping agency, Government Communications Headquarters, or GCHQ.
Dozens of internal documents and emails from Endace, obtained by The Intercept and reported in cooperation with Television New Zealand, reveal the firm’s key role helping governments across the world harvest vast amounts of information on people’s private emails, online chats, social media conversations, and internet browsing histories.
…so Endace which was seeded by taxpayer University money now has programs used by 5 Eyes, a Moroccan torture security agency and Israel.
John Key said NZ did not participate in mass surveillance despite being caught out lying at the Moment of Truth when Edward Snowden, Glenn Greenwald and Julian Assange all sourced evidence showing our GCSB reassured the NSA that Key’s new spy laws would allow them to commit mass surveillance.

National are using this mass surveillance power to co-ordinate drone strikes, spy on beneficiaries, spy on social activists and are in the middle of giving the GCSB and SIS powers to break the law whenever they want.
No Government, Left or Right should have this level of power over their citizens. We are blindly allowing a Deep State to mutate in front of our eyes with window dressing accountability.

Nothing fascists do should come as a shock. Fascists are capable of anything, including rounding up women and children and starving them to death. Or bombing them to smithereens. History is replete with such actions.
NZ fascists are no different from any others, though the modern-day fascism we are seeing is still being consolidated by stealth rather than at the point of a gun.
Don’t bother to complain: your letter to the editor won’t be published; your comment to your local council will be ignored or deleted; your letter to government will be responded to with platitudes and lies. And your name will be moved up the list of ‘persons of interest’ to be eliminated at a later stage.
Another three years or so of deteriorating financial, economic, social and environmental conditions will probably bring it all to a head. Then expect arbitrary arrests, detention without trial and the summary executions to commence.
Longer term none of it will matter because the fascists who are in control (here and overseas) are in the process of rendering the Earth uninhabitable for all humans and most other vertebrate life forms, almost certainly by 2050.

I can hear the comments, saying, “the others do it also, so we must protect ourselves by being technologically ahead of them”.
What I think is the following, NZ Inc is again being used as a convenient large LABORATORY, to test these new technologies, and to harvest endless metadata and more.
While many are gleefully gazing at their blue light smart phone, tablet and notebook screens, feeling entertained, and browsing around innocently, all data is captured, stored, analysed and even sold on to advertisers and in some cases made available to the NZ and other governments, where they feel they need to keep an eye on people.
We are only connected to the rest of the world by one or two internet transmission cables, so that is damned easy to tap into and do what they love doing.
It is like with other “privacy” rules, that corporations use regularly, they say the information they gather from your webuse (including TVNZ by the way!) will not identify you personally, but they ALL gather your IP address, your profile, your browsing behaviour, and in some cases your user names and definitely email address.
So those using On Demand from TVNZ, you should make a Privacy Act request, to ask for what personal information they hold on you. It may take time, you may perhaps not even hear back, but when they respond, you will be surprised what they keep on you.
So TVNZ may be good at selling this news, they are doing it themselves, the hypocrites.
