     Causes of The Great Depression

     •Many people mistakenly think that the stock market crash of 1929 is what caused the great depression. Although the stock market crash severely influenced the impact of the great depression, America was already on its way to an economical turmoil. Throughout the 1920’s there was a false sense of prosperity. The economy grew too big for itself under false pretenses and was too good to be true. Many Americans spent more money then they could afford due to the installment plan. The “buy now pay later” ended up being the downfall, people would buy now and not have enough money to pay when later came around thus increasing consumer debt. This causing a downward spiral of businesses closing due to the loss of money and the decrease in consumer spending. Even though after the stock market crash of 1929, thousands of banks failed, the banks were failing long before the crash. “In fact, during the 1920s, 600 banks failed each year, on average” (Causes Of The Great Depression).
     •Although the 20’s was a time of wealth and economical boom, many people made very little money. The average person had a very low income and only 1% of the population made a substantial amount of money.

     •In the industry sector, the machine technology was majorly lagging. Companies did not update their machinery so that they could save money. Most industries could not afford to update to the latest technology and could not advance their industry
     •The agriculture sector was greatly influenced by the war. During WW1 there was a high demand for food and crops but after the war, Europe was again cheaply importing crops and the demand for local farmers decrease. With the already low demand for crops, the farmers were hit hard by the great depression. Farmers grew an overabundance of food and were forced to lower the prices to compete eventually they ran out of money to keep up their farms.
     • Through out this, the government tried to continue trading to keep the budget balanced. The government tried to make sure that it was not spending too much money that we really didn’t have.
     •The federal government reduced the national money supply because they thought that we were running low on money and they wanted to save as much of it as they could. The government thought that the economy was going to continue rising so it didn’t feel the need to continue investing in the economy.

     •WW1 may not have effected America that much, but it effected many other countries such as Germany and Britain. At this time, countries had high tariffs on their imports to protect their own industries, but Britain was hit hard by that due to their economy relying on trading but after WW1 40% of their merchant ships were destroyed by German submarines. Germany also was hit hard economically by the war. Germany was in over 33 billion dollars worth of debt by the end of the war.
     •The decline in foreign market happened because after WW1 countries started to recover and produce their own goods. They got back on their feet so there was not really a demand for the goods America was overproducing such as guns and ammunition, food, clothing, and household goods. Once other countries were able to stand their ground, they didn’t have to rely on America economically.

   LATEST: Student protesters should ”keep their heads down” because most people think they are ”doing okay,” Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce says.

   Hundreds of students across the country yesterday protested against what Joyce said ”seemed to be a bit of a grab-bag” of issues.

   Auckland University Students’ Association president Joe McCrory said the protest was ”a student led movement against Government attacks on students”.

   William Joyce was born in New York of an Irish father and an English mother on 24 April 1906, but when he was only three the family moved to Ireland, settling in County Mayo. Joyce was educated at a convent school in Galway – the College of St. Ignatius Layola.

   Friends in Germany put Joyce in contact with Dr. Erich Hetzler – Private Secretary to Germany’s Foreign Minister von Ribbentrop. Two weeks after the outbreak of war he was appointed Editor and speaker for the German transmitters for Europe at Berlin’s Charlottenburg. Joyce was still only 33 years old. His wartime broadcasts to England became infamous – he was nicknamed ‘Lord Haw-Haw’ by a Daily Express journalist because of his aristocratic nasal drawl. Unknown to the public at this time, his image was very different from the scar-faced fascist thug he was usually portrayed as.

   Married Hazel Barr on April 30, 1927, who bore him two children then Joyce was divorced in 1936, and he married Margaret Cairns White, in London, on February 13, 1937.

   Joyce left the British Fascisti in 1925, disillusioned with their lack of political conviction, and he joined the Conservative Party. He graduated from Birkbeck in 1927 and married Hazel Barr on April 30, 1927, who bore him two children. He decided on a full-time academic career, but was galvanized, in October 1932, by the arrival on the political scene of Oswald Mosley, who launched the British Union of Fascists, a party that Joyce quickly joined, dropping his academic career overnight to become an impassioned party speaker

   Joyce became the most important propaganda broadcaster in Germany at the time, and both he and his wife were granted naturalized German citizenship on September 26, 1940. With almost as many listeners as the BBC, he gained an almost mythical status: there were claims that he could forecast bomb targets, and that he knew intimate details about target sites

   After the Battle of Britain and the invasion of Russia, Joyce’s broadcasts lost more and more listeners in Britain – but he still remained the number one broadcaster in Berlin and his anti-semitism never faded in its virulence – continuing to blame the war on “Jewish International Finance.” For his efforts Joyce continued to live a comfortable life in Berlin and in September 1944 was awarded the Cross of War Merit 1st Class with a certificate signed by Adolf Hitler. As the war worsened he began to drink heavily and his marriage became a joke with both his wife and he having numerous affairs.

   During the final stages of the war, with the Red Army approaching Berlin, Joyce moved to Hamburg. He made a final broadcast on 30 April 1945 – warning that the war would leave Britain poor and barren now that she had lost all her wealth and power in 6 years of war, leaving the Russians in control of most of Europe. He signed off with a final defiant “Heil Hitler.”

   Joyce went to his death unrepentant and defiant saying, “In death as in life, I defy the Jews who caused this last war, and I defy the powers of darkness which they represent,” according to the BBC.

   He was hanged at Wandsworth Prison at 9 a.m. on January 3, 1946, the last person in British history to be hanged for treason.

   Like all executed prisoners, he was buried in un-consecrated ground within the prison grounds

   The fate of Margaret Joyce, who had followed much the same path as her husband, in terms of treasonable actions, was markedly different to that of her husband.

   There are two main theories about her treatment after their arrest in Flensburg, and her return to the U.K. Firstly, that the authorities felt that she had suffered enough through her husband’s trial, and that they had no appetite for a further trial, and secondly, that Joyce agreed to keep his connections to MI5 secret, in exchange for the freedom of Margaret. Certainly, as a British citizen, born and raised, a treason case against her could more easily have been made than against her husband, although she was not as well known a broadcaster as her husband had been.

   For whatever reason, she was never charged, and was instead shipped out of Britain shortly after his execution, but was allowed to return back to the U.K. some years later. She died in 1972, reportedly from alcohol-related illness.

   On August 18, 1976, William Joyce’s remains were exhumed from their site within Wandsworth Prison and returned for burial to Ireland, where they were re-interred at the New Cemetery in Bohermore, County Galway.
