Public toilets up for rent in Auckland

Five Auckland public toilets are up for rent, with a public open day to be held at the dunnies.

The heritage buildings are for tender by Auckland Council which said the opportunities for transformation are endless.

“Similar projects in New Zealand and abroad have seen public toilets transformed into cafes, bars, retail spaces, galleries, salons and more,” said Auckland Council’s general manager property, Ian Wheeler.

“We look forward to seeing a range of ideas.”

The five toilets are on Customs St West, Wellesley St East, the corner of Market Place and Sturdee St, at the Kingsland Rail Station on New North Rd and in the Sandringham Reserve on Sandringham Rd.

Auckland is absolute crap when it comes to public toilets. We simply don’t have enough, and because Council see them as an unnecessary cost, they seem to forever be coming up with ways to shut them down and move the cost of providing some type of  public toilets to retailers and eateries.

This new move to hock off some inner city public toilets is the latest move.  Here’s a  unique idea for public toilets – how about making them public toilets?

We have this constant drive by commercial interests to erode public spaces for private business use with the promise of free public access that always falls over once everyone forgets that it used to be public space. Auckland needs more public toilets, and less commercial encroachment.

  1. Holy crap !!!

Next they’ll be putting buckets out for us to use and contracting crews to empty those buckets into a moving sewage pick up truck !!!

What a load of old shit this place is becoming !!!

Really ending up in the poo.

  2. Yep,

Well they will put more in use if they could charge for them, oh well I guess that’s next eh?

  3. I’m sure they will invent a phone app to deal with urgent bladder and colonic needs.

You know there’s really a housing crisis in NZ when they sell off toilets.

Surely land taken for toilets would have to revert back to Maori ownership – the Council better make sure they they have the “i”s dotted and “t”s crossed in their imminent toilet deals. Otherwise they will be in deep tutae.
