Ice glaciers are melting faster than the Government are moving to restores democracy to ECan. The Government removed democracy from the Council so that they could ram through more water use for South Island dairy Farmers, this alone should be an astonishing abuse of political power that remains on front pages, but this Government’s constant abuse of political power mixed with an electorate who don’t care when it’s the right abusing political power mean the blatant self interest of robbing Canterbury of their own ability to decide who uses their water  barely registers.

The latest move to slowly reintroduce democracy to ECan – as long as it doesn’t threaten dairy water interests – alongside the pathetic emissions targets  shows us a Government in total denial about climate change.

We are seeing more and more extreme weather events because of the pollution we are pumping into the atmosphere, the science is clear cut yet we have a Government more interested in promoting the interests of dairy over leadership on climate change.

The climate change debate is now a cultural one powered by self interest from those who have benefitted most from unfettered free market capitalism.

  1. As with the myth about National being the party of business and hence superior managers of the economy, there is a myth that these are the practical guys, the ones who face reality vs the “loony left”, they use fact-based decision making while promoting a philosophy of individual responsibility and minimal government intervention. It’s crap they choose policy not on principle but what benefits their mates, their constituency.

They aren’t climate change deniers. They know full well what is happening and the potential impacts. The PM’s science adviser, among a host of others, has made it clear what the impacts are.

This is not denial. This is willful intransigence. This a government not working in the best interests of its citizens. They need to change or go.

  2. Doing it slowly doesn’t makd any difference to the polluted river in the end. No judtification ever for sacking Environment Canterbury councillors. Except that they would not comply with Johnkey and his mates who want to get richer and to hell with the rivers. Poor working folk don’t need clean water for recreation. What the hell are we doing letting ordinary folk have playtime anyway? Shouldn’t they be slaving away at the minimum rate of pay so we can keep more of our profits? They don’t need clean rivers and beaches!
