We are spending over $60million to train 1% of the Iraq army to fight ISIS who were funded by Saudi Arabia in a regional struggle against Iran. We are on the side of butchers who have generated the conditions under which ISIS have thrived and recruited. We are in a war that is unwinnable and we have had the Prime Minister justify mass surveillance laws and Muslim fear mongering to send our troops there to ‘train’.
But what is actually more of a threat to NZ? ISIS or Climate change? If the Government can blow tens of millions to fight a self created radical movement on the other side of the planet, why is it doing bugger all to stop climate change, a real problem that is happening here and is happening now?
Climate change is easily a much larger and immediate threat to NZ than ISIS ever will be, yet the attention the Government are prepared to give reinvading Iraq over real leadership on climate change is embarrassing.
The reason of course is that the Government has political interests in distracting us with an external Muslim threat and has political interests in continuing dairy intensification.
Climate change is simply too big a problem for short-sighted power-hungry politicians to even comprehend. The average NZ’er, simply doesn’t have the time or energy left over after struggling to make ends meet, or even worse, struggling to support an unattainable dream lifestyle sold to them by the tiny minority who have enveigled themselves into being our political “representatives”.
We are now deeply into the sixth, some would argue seventh, mass extinction of species, globally. The problem of destructive climate change isn’t something for our children to deal with it’s happening now, in our lifetimes.
For a normal, emotionally
moderately well balanced person, dealing with an individual displaying narcissistic personality disorder is an impossible task.
Dealing with the far end of that spectrum, a sociopathic personality disorder which appears to characterise a high-achieving CEO or politician is utterly beyond the limits.
The primary, possibly only requirement for being a politician should be “I don’t want to do it”.
Martyn, by default you’re in the invidious position of providing a voice for some of us who care, but don’t know how to express it an a manner that can be heard, let alone taken notice of.
Thank you Peter for your comments – I agree with everything you say. It’s cool comfort but be reassured there are thousands of us here who feel the same way as you do. There should be a country wide initiative with everybody involved in sustainability, cleaning up waterways etc. How many 100 year weather events and towns flooded will it take? I am unfortunately not holding my breath anything will get done. World wide extreme climate doesn’t favour anybody, no matter how much wealth and privilege you have and bolt holes to retire/escape to – the weather is going to mess with your life just like the rest of us. The planet will go through another extinction just like it has done in the past and will sort its house out. So foolish are the people in power, we are just gnats on the surface of the earth and will have no say in the matter. It would help if we had a democratic process which allowed informed debate and critical analysis to be heard – we ideally should all be in this debate but its not going to happen with this present government in power. If you are in a position of responsibility for this country, don’t read and learn from history and have no iota of vision or care for its citizens then we will be up the creek in a serious way. One way or another our leaders will have to own this predicament our younger generations will have to endure.

If Iraqi troops haven’t learnt any form of miltary education and response over the past 15 plus years or so then it’s highly unlikely they(the Iraqi military)are going to learn anything additional from NZ troops stationed in Iraq.And so the ‘training’ of Iraqi troops by NZ troops in Iraq is probably due to a promise John Key made to Obama just to remain on good golfing terms with the US president.Once a NZ troop in Iraq is caught and then executed by the IS then Key will probably attend the fallen soldier’s funeral for photo opportunities ONLY.Once more than 3 NZ soldiers lives are wiped out by IS then Key will happily send more NZ troops as cannon fodder to Iraq.
And in regards to Climate change? Well I am sure this government makes more money out of NZ troops than out of climate control.Humans are more easier to control than climate.
