  1. The parallels with the Roman Empire are not just metaphorical. For a century or two before the Republic fell to the first the Caesars (Augustus), there was a class struggle between the Plebians (working class) and Patricians (aristocracy). Excluding the slaves, the working classes worked on huge farms (and I assume elsewhere). Julius Caesar actually didn’t threaten the Republic but threatened the aristocracy because he was supported by the Plebians. Hence he had to be eliminated.
