If inquiry into GCSB shows they abused power – Groser must resign

Surely the sleepy hobbits of muddle Nu Zilind will get this won’t they? Yes the PM’s Office colluding with the SIS to falsify information and smear the Leader of the Opposition months out before the 2011 election is a big scary idea that most either couldn’t understand or worse – quietly agreed with, but we all get do we not that using the GCSB to spy on a  job for Tim Groser is an outrageous abuse of political power?

Let’s hope so because yet another political inquiry into the mass surveillance lies of John Key has been opened and this time if it does find out that the GCSB just decided to spy to get Key’s mate a job then that will be an abuse of power too far and Groser must resign.

NZers who voted National really do need a long hard look in the mirror and ask when abuse of political power is unacceptable because if Labour had pulled this stunt, they would be screaming bloody murder and demanding a revolution.

This Government is the most politically corrupt Government in recent NZ history, the sleepy hobbits of muddle Nu Zilind might not get that, and the mainstream media certainly won’t tell them, but the judicial checks and balances thankfully still have the independence to demand accountability.

  1. With all the outcry in Germany over the last week about their spying for america, just like here, I don’t understand why it isn’t even being questioned by the public here. What is it going to take?

  2. but the judicial checks and balances thankfully still have the independence to demand accountability.

You have more confidence in them than me.

It’s all very well going through the motions, or pretence, of accountability but even if the judicial checks are honest or brave enough to find abuse of power this Government has a track record of simply totally ignoring or answering to any adverse findings – and of getting away with it.

  3. And they’re ONLY able to get away with this, not just because of the sleepy hobbits (though that DOES help) but because our media is controlled by a FEW very wealthy people who NEED to have the National party in power to get ALL that corporate welfare (BUT woo …… not for the poor unwashed as that’d be TERRIBLE and antiDemocratic).
So the Corporate Lame Street Media (CLSM) lie (re: Cunliffe debacle), omit (most reporting nowadays, but e.g Cunliffes ‘Being a man apology’), misrepresent (re Pony Tail gate) and do WHATEVER it takes to get National back in power.
And even stranger stil is that Kiwis PAY to read the propaganda releases (Herald et al) or can’t wait for the 6pm news (or breakfast shows) to get their daily propaganda (without seeing it for what it is). And YET we still wonder how Hitler and many other tyrants, got to take over power in seemingly developed and educated countries.
I worry about the future for NZ and whether too much damage has been done by JK et al already.

    • One day….the mighty will fall….and oh what a fall that will be.

You will see in future,….historians look back when it is safe to do so and name Key and his govt …one of the most , if not the most , corrupt and dangerous subversives this country has ever had the misfortune to endure.

Their political epitaph will simply go down as lackeys for foreign interests and corporate plunderer’s .

      Nothing more , nothing less.

      • 1000% WK

See how arrogant Groser is when he dismisses the enquiry as “I am quite comfortable”!!!!!

The slimeball is so GROSS his name is so fitting eh?

Meaning of Gross- crude earthy gross vulgar(adj)conspicuously and tastelessly indecent

        • Its Key who should resign ,hes even more “comfortable” than Grosser,Grosser is just a frontman for Key.
Key left Grosser to front the push for TPP,if it ever happensl

Key will say he stepped down and left it to Grosser ,Key had a different hat on so nothing to do with him .
Key was one of the original exponants of TPP along with Obama .
My concern is they are pushing the TPP, and TIRSA is out of limelight and may be pushed through under the radar .
We have absolutely no trust in Key or his government ,If it wasnt for MSM Key would out on his ear by now, they never tell it like it is ,so he gets away with with everything as planned.

    • yup… propaganda.the word is certainly more accurate than news, wouldn’t hold my breath about grosser inquiry, same whitewash as others, or when nefarious doings are uncovered, they will be hushed up, brushed off and ignored by “media”. remember previous inquiries? Key actually said gcsb was vindicated despite serious questions regarding legalities and oversight. sigh…it really is outrageous they way they get away with these things. i know i’m outraged

  4. You say @ Martyn .
” This Government is the most politically corrupt Government in recent NZ history, ”

Are you sure about that ? Those who took NZ’s wealth and infrastructure and in so doing ran our country into the ground while making off with billions was before yankee doodle psycho jonky-stiens reign of classless , graceless , and rude , nouveau riche shenanigans .

I’ve only just got around to watching the first series of House of Cards and Oh My God . Talk about art mirroring reality.

I’m not at all sorry to bang on about Farmer/Politics/vast amounts of money . Imagine this ? Fifty One Thousand individuals earn our export revenue from agrarian enterprises ( It was , until recently, significantly less ) . Never mind the Post farm gate infrastructure . They can wait on the dole or in meaningless , pointless shit factory jobs and most of those are going to China , is that not right Hillside Work Shops ? ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillside_Engineering )

Yankee Doodle Psycho Jonky-Stien’s just another shovel full of shit on the dung heap that is our political history .

Chillingly , there’s more crap arriving by Gulf Stream jet into Queenstown daily . And one may be worried about a few poor desperate boat people from some distant Hell braving the heaving Tasman ocean. Ha ! The real danger is coming from above !

Well, that’s me all worked up for lunch .

  5. This sort of stuff mainly produces “shy Tories”. To generate votes you need to construct a positive vision of a better future.

“Get more money so you can get more stuff” doesn’t cut it.
Nor does “pull down the bastards”.

Where you might make progress is by pointing out the fundamental problem with the Let-the-Market-Decide Right Wing of politics in New Zealand.

Their problem is that they philosophically do not believe in intervention. In this they have a natural affinity for the I-Got-Mine conservatives and the Slap-the-Lazy-Maori/Beneficiaries-Down rednecks.

You can only feel sorry for these people who, having achieved a famous victory can do nothing but sit and hope that things get better to crown their success without being able to intervene. (Apart from pandering to wealthy countries and building moats, both real and figurative against the marauding poor). They are hard-wired against transformational ideas or inventive solutions.

They are therefore forced to watch house prices rise without searching for a game changer. They cannot understand why New Zealand might try to make a worthwhile contribution to peace and co-operation in international affairs. How sad it was to watch John Key trying to find anything positive in our election to the Security Council. He finally managed to opine that it might help our trade relations a bit. He wasn’t kidding. He genuinely believes, like a weird throwback to the behaviourists of the sixties, that the only way you can judge our success on the world stage is by an improved balance sheet. Why else get involved in Iraq? If he really did believe we must get some guts and get into this fight then half a dozen trainers seems somewhat underwhelming. It looks suspiciously like a minimalist attempt to get on the good side of the US.

So, in short, one approach might be to expressly offer to do all the things the Right are unable to do. Like try to make things better for all those who are having to do it tough both here and (even) abroad. Like intervene to encourage innovation or help people start small businesses or help start-ups explore export opportunities, or help existing businesses up-scale and produce higher paid jobs. Like offer to introduce capital gains taxes (predated to catch houses bought two years or more previously. The very idea of this would be enough to scare off most international participants in the housing market. You might not even have to introduce the regime). Like requiring non-residents to unload local real estate. Like building housing yourself, rather than hoping a speculator will do it for you. Like recognizing that the imbalance between rich and poor is about what you are able to do, about personal mana and about a sense of being respected in your interaction with the rest of society, not just about getting more money (I mean after you can afford to live, of course).

A government which can’t see beyond getting more money – and which is not even very good at that, because it refuses to see the role the State can play in advancing enterprise, innovation and participation – is perhaps understandable in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis.

But a country with ambition to improve opportunity and outcome for all its people deserves better.

  6. I think nothing wrong will be found, not in this New Zealand it won’t be!

It wasn’t for Katherine Rich this week where an inquiry found her conflicts of interest, as detailed in Dirty Politics were nothing of the sort. It may have looked like a duck, walked like a duck, sounded like a duck but bugger me it wasn’t a duck, it was a just a rat.

Judith Collins too was found to be squeaky clean too after John Keys relentless, leave all stones unturned – mega quarantined inquiry. Funny though, she still sitting on the back benches.

And again this will be the case. No proof apart from what Snowden said will be able to be located and you can’t trust him, he’s a thief apparently. With insufficient corroborating proof the whole unpleasantness will just fade away, just another left-wing conspiracy.

We live in very dishonest times, things are never what they seem with National. There is a style of Enigma coded cryptic language used with every ministerial press utterance that is so confusing and misleading and done in such a way that would have made U Boat commanders communique’s invincible. It seems things that are inconvenient can be made or paid to go away.

So even on the 1% chance Snowden’s information is treated seriously how could Groser take the fall, he was surely part of a more elaborate scheme than to get into the WTO for silly old NZ’s sake.

  7. You can bet if this happened under a Labour government, the Herald, other media, and Opposition, would be screaming blue murder!!!

  8. Q. “Surely the sleepy hobbits of muddle Nu Zilind will get this won’t they?

    A. In a word, no.

  9. Look this is all a distraction. Make the point. Move on and leave it as a reference point when appropriate. Banging on endlessly at a time when it won’t make a plop of difference is like shooting off all your bullets on the plane to Abu Dhabi. Hmm not a good analogy, but you get the idea, I hope.

This is the time for mending fences and plotting out desirable transformations.

While I’m on this, to those among us who hate the a supposed direction that Labour is taking and bemoan the demise of the leading party of the Left I respectfully suggest the following:

Not happy with Labour policy but still hope to win an election one day and contribute to a better society?

Join the Labour Party and make a contribution to the debate. I would say the same to all you jaded academics who support an interventionist agenda. Drop the cynicism and get involved. It is easier and safer to sit back and snipe but your contribution may just help. There is still time to establish a programme that offers really constructive and innovative progress towards a more inclusive society.

Don’t kid yourselves that the Greens, Mana or anyone else is going to do anything but muddy the waters. It is going to have to be Labour and as a matter of policy, now is the time for all good men…….or would you rather hide in the safety of aggrieved opposition forever?

Note: I’m not a member of the Labour Party, by the way and have never been a”joiner”, but I think I am going to have to take my own advice, (or drink my own Kool-aid, as the case may be).

    • I love this line of unity when it was Labour that gutted the Greens and Internet-MANA. I have zero interest in voting or joining a Labour Party that is merely a faint shadow of National.

My values are not so easily compromised thank you Nick.

      • Martyn!
Your comment makes my point for me. Not happy with National-lite, but still hope one day to win an election and change the national dynamic? You know what you have to do, whether you like it or not.
(By the way, the way I read it, the Greens shafted Labour rather than the other way round. We may have to differ on that one.)

  10. If Groser goes down, then so must Key. But I guess the latter will be a case of “Nothing to do with me … I didn’t know anything about the spying!” The usual expected BS!

No leadership, no accountability whatsoever. 🙁

Doubt anything will come of it though! Another whitewash … nothing to see here, move on …..!

  11. I suppose the “excuses” by Groser and Key will say something like, it was necessary to gather information on other contenders for that high level WTO job, as we got some information, that terrorists were going to use their contacts and staff as “pseudonyms” (or fake alias identities), to in turn gather information on Groser, to attack and harm him.

Teflon works, and “mental teflon” is the treasure trove tool-kit of this government, they come up with all kinds of bizarre explanations, excuses and distractions, so the sleepy hobbits will simply swallow that again, and go back to rest. The MSM is too focused on freak weather, royal visit, celeb, sports and common crime reporting, they will find no time to read the GCSB report.

  12. Dictators always get others to do their dirty work folks that’s clear.

Groser is as arrogant as key is and must know his fate well before now, and if it turns against him key will stuff Groser pockets with taxpayer money and find him a cushy job somewhere just wait & see.
