Headline: Caution danger: flip flop on a pork barrel

No amount of spinning can hide the fact the Government will knock down a Gisborne bridge it has just spent $100,000 strengthening, Labour’s Economic Development spokesperson Grant Robertson says.

“Work on the one-lane Motu Bridge between Gisborne and Opotiki is about a fortnight away from completion.

“However, now it is one of 14 regional roads hand-picked by the Government, its days are numbered. The Government announced yesterday it will be replaced.

“National should take care. Performing a flip flop on a pork barrel is a dangerous feat.

“Gisborne Mayor Meng Foon has labelled the money spent on the strengthening the bridge as ‘wasted’.

“The people of Gisborne and taxpayers deserve better than the short-sightedness of this Government.

“No amount of pork-barrelling can replace a proper plan for economic development in Gisborne, which is what a Labour Government will deliver,” Grant Robertson says.
