Headline: Research centres lose funding to new kid on the block
New Zealand’s six Centres of Research Excellence are set to lose some of their funding after Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce today confirmed a new centre would be resourced from their pool, Labour’s Associate Tertiary Education spokesperson Megan Woods says.
“The Government heralded four new CoREs in this year’s Budget. But today Steven Joyce said there was no new money for one which would be funded by reallocating the existing budget.
“The Minister needs to come clean and tell the initial six successful recipients what this means for the funding they will actually receive. They are currently planning their research programmes and need clarity.
“Like so much with the National Government, its funding for research is smoke and mirrors.
“Steven Joyce’s creation of four new CoREs is an acknowledgement of Labour’s concerns that critical research areas such as bio-protection, Māori research, high-value food products and human development missed out on funding in the initial round.
“Hopefully some of these vital areas will be the winners in this next round,” Megan Woods says.
