Headline: Nikki Kaye exaggerates housing numbers on flyer

National’s Auckland Central MP Nikki Kaye is so keen to talk up the Government’s failed attempt to address Auckland’s housing crisis, she has distributed flyers claiming 11,000 homes have been consented which haven’t, Labour’s Housing spokesperson Phil Twyford says.

“The flyers given out to Auckland Central voters claim more than 15,000 houses have already been consented under the Auckland Housing Accord.

“In fact, the first housing monitoring report released last month showed only 3,599 sections and dwellings combined have been consented so far – less than a quarter of what Nikki Kaye is claiming.

“The Auckland Housing Accord is nothing but mish-mash of projections, predictions and promises by the Government in an attempt to look as if it is doing something to address Auckland’s housing crisis.

“I feel sorry for National MPs who have to publicly try and defend Nick Smith’s failed housing policy. The public are demanding action on the housing crisis, but National’s own figures show they are failing miserably to deliver the 10,000 new houses a year Auckland needs just to keep up with population growth.

“Nick Smith promised 39,000 new homes, but he is already reporting on ‘consented subdivisions’ not actual homes built, and officials admit that only 5000-odd homes will actually be built in his Special Housing Areas over the next three years. Aucklanders have been given no details on how many homes will be affordable.

“The Government continues to tinker around the edges of New Zealand’s housing crisis. Only a Labour government will build 100,000 affordable homes under our KiwiBuild policy and restore hope to would-be homeowners,” Phil Twyford says.
