The Government’s bizarre ban on seasonal workers busking at local markets is ridiculous, Labour’s MP for Tasman-Nelson Damien O’Connor says.

“Immigration Minister Michael Woodhouse has ruled seasonal workers from Vanuatu cannot raise money for community projects back home.

“These workers have been playing music at a local farmers market in Motueka to the delight of the local community.

“Their music was a wonderful opportunity for locals to experience Ni-Vanuatu culture and music.

“At a time when the horticultural industry has been asking for an increase in the number of seasonal workers, this effectively confines the workers to their barracks.

“Motueka maybe Over the Hills and Far away, but the Minister isn’t showing a Whole Lotta Love for these workers who leave behind their families to come and do a tough job in New Zealand.

“This decision is abhorrent. These workers are being denied basic human rights and freedom of choice and expression.

“I had hoped this was a Communication Breakdown. But sadly Michael Woodhouse’s letter shows that is not the case.

“The Minister’s Dazed and Confused if he doesn’t think people will be outraged by this,” Damien O’Connor says.

  1. A. MAZING. these workers not only do the jobs that need to be done, they also add to our economy as well as help their economy. Are they taking jobs from New Zealanders then? And how detrimental will it be to the local economy anyhow that they are busking at the markets? Ingenious some would call it, sharing, others would say, deepening cross cultural ties may be another way to look at it, entrepreneurial maybe? Oh dear, maybe IRD could get their names and tax them just so it is fair on everyone. Not.
