The apocalypse caused by Aucknado has been slightly overblown

  1. I’m curious as to why such a big deal was made out of this particular cyclone when cyclones are a regular occurrance further north and usually lose much of their force by the time they reach New Zealand. Why was this one considered special.

I am speculating that it has something to do with the recent flooding in Christchurch. Is it a case of the weather forecasters being extra cautious after been caught out by that?

The fact is that most of our weather disasters happen out of the blue and are only reported after the fact. But for forecasters it is better to be safe than sorry, particularly to avoid being held liable for damages.

    • Six days out from Sunday’s expected experience, it was reliably predicted to be centred directly over the city of Christchurch. At least for the period of one high tide, heavy easterly wave action and the low pressure sea level change coupled with onshore winds holding back expected rain event volumes at scales predicted to be equal or greater than the previous flood event a few weeks before.

Sorry to disagree with you noting that our “mayor’s” paternalistic approach was very necessary given the direct and indirect impacts on peoples sanity. We are not over it… our battles with authorities and their reasoning around getting peoples lives

together are as illogical as the weather. and often worse than the aftershocks.
