Manning, Hide, Chapman On ACT Extremism, McCarten, Pike River Deals

It was a very lively RadioLive Sunday Morning Panel with Wallace Chapman, Rodney Hide, Selwyn Manning this morning where we discuss:

  • ACT’s ‘Godfather’ Alan Gibbs urging the party to campaign for privatisation of all roads, schools, and hospitals… And is ACT’s new leader Jamie Whyte too politically naive for the job?
  • Also, we dicuss the inside word on what Matt McCarten’s appointment as Labour leader David Cunliffe’s chief of staff means for Labour and the campaign.
  • We also dig into this very shameful Pike River dodgy deal, and consider what the Prime Minister John Key’s weird comments in defence of Government officials (for accepting a $3.4 million purse for charges to be dropped against Peter Whittall) means for the rule of law in this country.

  1. And is ACT’s new leader Jamie Whyte too politically naive for the job?

One thing that occurred to me, Selwyn, is that Whyte’s apolitical naivete may be another form of Key’s style of “ordinary blokey apolitical” politics.

People may see Whyte as a political “innocent” and therefore tolerant of his comments. Unlike John Banks and Rodney Hide, who breathed politics from every pore, Whyte is almost portrayed as an “outsider” trying to fit in.

God help us if we have another Key – this time leading a revived, extremist political party…

      • Indeed, Selwyn…It kinda occurred to me as I watched Whyte being interviewed in “the Nation” during the weekend. It was such a low-key interview and Whyte came across as… ordinary.

In some ways, that interview was more telling than Gower’s botched interview with David Cunliffe…
