I realise that some people may say I’ve hopped on the ‘Pope Francis Bandwagon’ but how awesome is he?

I’m not Catholic, or even Christian, nor do I intend to be anytime soon but that’s not exactly a prerequisite of being increasingly interested in everything he has to say, which describes me lately.

He first grabbed my attention when he removed the elaborate attire from his clothing, then he denounced the religious response to the Gay Rights Movement, then he criticised capitalism and the impact it has on the majority of the world’s population.

Finally a leader who is acknowledging that looking out for all humankind should be our priorities rather than our own self-interests. Finally a religious leader who is saying that being self-serving at the expense of other human beings is a bigger abomination than someone’s personal life decisions. And these are the beliefs of most religious people in this world, which is why its so great to see him represent the opinions of the majority.

Religion aside, I hope that the widespread approval of the Pope’s message about a social and political shift leads to real change for 2014, especially for New Zealand’s very important election year.

  1. Agree. I’m not a Catholic or a practicing Christian. However, I think Pope Francis is doing a great job, in demonstrating some consideration and humility towards the vulnerable and less fortunate, wherever they may be. He is coming across as a leader of great compassion and kindness, a shining light in a very dark, aggressive and extremely selfish world. Not only that, but he is very ordinary.

Hopefully, people will begin to think about others for a change, instead of themselves, take on board what the Pope is saying and attempt to emulate the principles he is trying to establish. To do so, would make for a much better world.

  2. Absolutely agree. Christ taught compassion, humility, caring for the poor and vulnerable; it is wonderful to see a Pope who believes and teaches these same values.

  3. Agree wholeheartedly. It was the rampant hypocrisy I found in the Catholic Church that made me decide to leave it as a teenager. I believe this Pope is demonstrating truly Christian, compassionate liberal and modern views, and tho I will never go back to Catholicism, or any religion, for that matter, I can see that he is providing a truly wonderful role model to the whole of humanity. Our politicians would benefit greatly, imho, from taking a leaf out of his book.

  4. @ Debbie Brown .
If Christ taught compassion, humility, caring for the poor and vulnerable then it’s also true to say that paula bennett specifically and jonky generally are they Anti Christ ?

  5. Pope Francis is putting Christian “spirit” before Christian “ritual”, that is refreshing and encouraging, and definitely a step in the right direction for the Catholic Church and Christianity as a whole.

He may for once reverse the shift of so many “believers” to the many various modern TV preachers and their modern “churches”, who often seem to have ulterior motives – and in some cases “lead” by poor example, living in large, luxurious mansions and driving around in flash cars, or having private planes fly them around the world.

And we have at least one such “preacher” here in New Zealand, as I have heard. His wife was on “The Vote”, lecturing the poor to live from very little – and less than what others have.

  6. @ Nitrium: yup. When we hear the pope go into bat for women’s rights within the church and outside it, then I might be inclined to think of him as “awesome”.
