Headline: Is Colin Craig New Zealand’s Chicken Little?

Conservatives Leader Colin Craig’s concern that Kiwis are being poisoned by chemical trails from airplanes shows he is the Chicken Little of New Zealand politics, Labour’s Science and Climate Change spokesperson Moana Mackey says.

“John Key’s new best friend Colin Craig has refused to rule out a highly controversial theory that says exhaust fumes from some jet aircraft are deliberately dumping gallons of dangerous chemicals on the earth.

“Colin Craig says he is aware of the belief that ‘chemicals are being released at high altitude for some nefarious purpose’.

“Most New Zealanders would think this is wacky and the stuff of folk tales.

“Colin Craig’s concern about so-called ‘chemtrails’ sits alongside his rejection of man-made climate change.

“The science says Colin Craig is wrong on climate change.

“As the world faces a conservative prediction of a 19-inch rise in sea levels over this century and the prospect of climate change refugees on our Pacific backdoor, beliefs such as these are dangerous.

“John Key is so desperate for a coalition partner, he is willing to trade the climate change deniers in the ACT Party for even wilder ideas from the Conservatives,” Moana Mackey says.

  1. There was a lot of evidence that the anti-moth spraying campaigns in the early noughties made a lot of people sick, and despite the People’s Inquiry which collected and documented it, nobody in authority paid any attention. Is it any wonder people get suspicious about “chem-trails”?

Colin Craig is so desperate for votes he is trying to leave the door open for radical campaigners who have become frustrated with the Greens and their soft positions (or lack thereof) on toxics issues like 1080, water fluoridation etc, and are sick of being smeared as “conspiracy theorists”. The Pirate Party also has the door open for frustrated toxics campaigners, but unlike the Conservatives, the Pirates will take an evidence-based position on such issues as they come up.
