Headline: Spectrum space must be ring-fenced for public broadcasting
The Government must reserve spectrum space for any future new public broadcasting service, Labour’s Broadcasting Spokesperson Kris Faafoi said today.
“The digital spectrum that Sky Television has committed to return to the Crown gives the Government the perfect opportunity to reserve spectrum to give any future public broadcasting service the digital space to enable it broadcast.
“Unfortunately National’s short- term ‘take the money and run’ approach of selling spectrum to the highest bidder is likely to prevent any future public broadcaster from even getting off the ground.
“The Government could, of course, disprove all its critics in this area by reserving specific spectrum space.
“National needs to allow future governments the flexibility to develop broadcasting and communications policies that serve the public interest–and that includes regional broadcasting opportunities.
“A debate is also needed around ensuring space is available on the 4G spectrum for all free-to-air broadcasters so they have the flexibility to build new platforms and take innovative approaches as technology develops.
“Labour is committed to public broadcasting.
“Such non-commercial broadcasting is vital to an informed and engaged society. Ensuring spectrum is reserved for it is vital to all Kiwi communities and interests.”
