Headline: Prime Minister lacks courage over Sri Lanka
The Prime Minister, John Key, today in Question Time said that he would not be doing anything to challenge the convention that the current host of CHOGM should automatically carry on to be the Chair of the Commonwealth for the next two years, said Labour’s Human Rights Spokesperson, Maryan Street.
“Conventions are only in place for as long as they are useful. When they cease to be useful, they should be challenged, “said Maryan Street.
“If John Key wanted to be active instead of passive over Sri Lanka’s human rights record, he should propose an alternative to this automatic assumption of the Chair of the Commonwealth and get like-minded countries to support him. Even if he loses such an initiative, New Zealand’s defence of human rights remains intact even though the Commonwealth’s reputation will be damaged.
“His current position is very passive. Why does he lack the courage to act?” she asked.
