Headline: More people left in cold after power cut off

New figures obtained by Labour show almost 20,000 Kiwis have had their power cut off this year because they can’t afford to pay their electricity bills, Labour Leader David Cunliffe says.

“About 19,245 households had their power disconnected in the first half of this year alone. This is significantly higher than the same time last year and means disconnections for 2013 are likely to exceed 2012 when the number hit 40,000.

“That equates to 106 households having their power cut off every day, or four every hour.

“It comes as new figures from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment show power use fell 2.5 per cent in the June quarter, but prices rose 3.3 per cent or four times the rate of inflation.

“That means power has risen an average of $11.20 this quarter despite no increases in line charges. This is on top of an increase of about $50 last quarter.

“Grey Power is concerned there are increasing numbers of elderly suffering pneumonia and bad colds because of high power prices.

“It is tragic that people in New Zealand are forced to go to bed early to avoid putting their heaters on.

“A Labour government will take action to bring down New Zealand’s power prices. NZ Power will reduce the average bill for households by hundreds of dollars a year. Our plan will boost the economy and create jobs.

“Labour’s policies will stop people having to choose between their health and their power bill,” David Cunliffe says.

  1. ‘ Hundreds of dollars a year … ‘ Better make it thousands of dollars a year if you want my vote mate . Electricity should be supplied to New Zealanders free of charge . Yeah ! You heard me right . Free ! It’s our resource . So was our rail system , health and education etc . It’s not theirs . Our resources were never meant to make a ‘ profit ‘ . ( Jesus ! I can hear the eyeballs rolling from here . )
I saw jonky squeaking that it was under Labour that power prices increased 75 % . He failed to mention that , that was under Neo Labour . From the dark side of the dotted line that separated Neo Labour from Actual Labour that Prof Wayne Hope ( Or was it Chris Trotter ) talked about . It was from Labours dark side of the dotted line that jonky got his coalition buddy Big Johnny Banks and the ACT party from . Jesus , jonky’s such a slippery little fucker isn’t he ?
While you’re’ ( David Cunliffe ) lowering ‘ power prices by hundreds of dollars a year why not boot out all the foreign banks , clamp down on the rorting insurance industry and weld us closer to the UK and Europe while you’re at it and release us from the shackles that bind us to the fucking parasitic Chinese and the big , bloated , grease-fattened fat old slapper they feed off ; the USA . And don’t anyone dare mention the need for cowsploitatation in the same breath as farming for our financial survival . You know as well as I do that the fashionable popularity of cowsploitation on such a vast scale is a relatively new phenomenon . There are better , more efficient , safer , cleaner ways of exploiting our wonderful land than having millions of poor old cows shitting and pissing on it .
Dairy Farmers/workers should all take a tab of LSD and walk amongst their cows then watch D’Jango Unchained to get a different perspective on their cow/slave master relationship . Make it a cold , wet , windy Southland day to add a certain piquance to the whole experience .
At the risk of growing breasts and going Girl I’m drinking Soya Milk . I never touch dairy . Never again . A bit off topic sorry but I had fun .
