Headline: National should back food in schools bill
Mt Albert MP David Shearer is calling on National to back his food in schools bill, which was drawn from the Members’ Ballot today.
“First and foremost feeding kids is the responsibility of parents. But no child should have to start the day with an empty tummy – and the government, community groups and the business sector should step in where there is genuine need.
“My bill would guarantee that a food in schools programme would be available in all decile 1 to 3 primary and intermediate schools. It would be locked in by law, giving schools, children and business partners certainty.
“This is too important to be left vulnerable to changing budget priorities. By legislating for food in schools Parliament can show its commitment to the children of New Zealand and ensure that they won’t be left to start the school day hungry.
“I welcome the government’s recent efforts in this area, and urge National to support this legislation in the interests of Kiwi kids.
“The debate over the bill will also give parents, educators and community groups the chance to have their say about the best way to ensure our children are fed and ready to learn,” says David Shearer.
