A brief word on Suffrage Day

Today brothers and sisters is Suffrage Day, and on Suffrage Day, let’s not pretend that NZ ‘gave’ women the vote.

Women fought bloody hard against the system to get it, and even now 120 years later, they’re role in society is at best that of a second class citizen with lower pay and the lions share of societal vulnerability.

Respects to the courageous women who came before and those on the frontline now who continue to champion human rights, and a moment of reflection from Men as to the influence of invisible privilege in our lives and how we can continue to support our Mothers and Daughters and Aunties and Sisters to live lives as equally autonomous as our own.

  1. It saddens me to see no comment here. I will though make a start and say that I agree with Martyn and others, who realise, that women had to fight very hard for the right to vote, and for any other progressive, yes really “natural” and normal policies, that came afterwards.

I am furious how the media jumped onto the discussion within Labour about gender equality to be achieved by perhaps giving extra support to women candidates and members. The horrible “man ban” debate was disgusting. It was never meant to be that, and it was a cheap cop out by the too weak former Labour leader David Shearer to basically pressure the Council to abandon even bringing it into discussion.

While I am seeing little sense in quotas, it must be sensible and totally justfied to support female candidates to stand for Labour or any other party.

Having the crap MSM distract from what matters, and twist and manipulate the true policy debate, that proved to me once again, how disgustlingly poor we are served by a largely privatised, corporate, headline and scandal hunting “media”, that is not interested in facts and figures, and not wanting true democratic debate.

It also is no wonder, that they have been supporting John Key and his rather corrupt government, to get away with all kinds of things, and on the other hand seek out every opportunity to slam and rubbish anything that has come from the opposition.

NZ MSM should sink in bloody shame, and also for not even reporting on Suffrage Day. If there was any report, it has failed to be noticed by me, and you media monkeys out there are invited to point out YOUR reporting on that historic event.
