Nathan Guy is completely out of touch with his portfolio and needs to step up or step out, Labour’s Primary Industries spokesperson Damien O’Connor says.

“Mr Guy failed to answer crucial questions regarding the Primary Growth Partnership (PGP) programme in the House and at select committee today.

The PGB was set up three years ago, ostensibly to invest in research and innovation to boost productivity in New Zealand’s farming, forestry and food sectors.

“As of yesterday the Government had committed $670 million of taxpayer money to some 15 projects that have promised much yet delivered little.

“In fact no audit or accountability details are available.

“Mr Guy referred to the MPI website for the answers. While it notes an advisory panel has a monitoring and evaluation role – which includes receiving regular reports and presentations on progress – further searches failed to show anything more than where funds have been allocated.

“There is nothing that assures taxpayers that anything has been achieved courtesy of their generosity.

“This is irresponsible and unaccountable Government of the worst kind.

“While the objectives of the project may be noble, taxpayers deserve clear, honest answers on how the money is being spent.

“Many of these projects are already half completed, yet the Minister appears unable to provide reports on any progress whatsoever. He is throwing money at these projects like confetti is thrown at weddings.”
