Local Wellington MPs, Grant Robertson and Annette King, today congratulated the Wellington City Council on its decision to become a Living Wage employer in principle, and for Wellington to be a Living Wage Capital.

“This is a great step forward for low paid workers in our capital city. As Labour Wellington City Councillor Paul Eagle said, this is about Wellington City taking a leadership role in addressing inequality and poverty.

“The Council is taking a responsible approach by agreeing to a phased implementation of a living wage for their direct employees, and those of council controlled organisations and contractors,” Wellington Central MP Grant Robertson said.

“Once again Wellington is leading the way in terms of being a liveable city.  We need to make sure that workers in our city have the means to look after themselves and their families, and this decision is a great step forward,” MP for Rongotai Annette King said.

“Labour supports the Living Wage campaign.  We believe that all workers deserve to be paid a decent wage for their work. This campaign gives businesses and organisations the opportunity to commit to that and take the steps to make it a reality. It’s exciting that the movement is taking off in Wellington,” Grant Robertson said.

“Now that the Council has shown this leadership it’s a chance for businesses in the city to get on board and show the rest of New Zealand that our city is, despite what John Key might say, very much alive, vibrant and looks after all its people,” Annette King said.
