Headline: Trickle-down housing policy
The centrepiece of the Government’s affordable housing policy is a Bill that won’t lead to any new affordable housing, says Labour’s housing spokesperson Phil Twyford.
“Auckland’s deputy mayor Penny Hulse submitted on the bill today and became the latest in a long line of councillors, property developers and experts who have told the select committee they don’t believe the Housing Accords and Special Housing Areas Bill will result in the building of affordable housing.
“Ms Hulse told the committee Auckland Council wanted the Bill amended to give the Council the power to require affordable housing in the Bill’s Special Housing Areas.
“This Bill is based on the old trickle-down theory. Housing Minister Nick Smith seems to believe that simply increasing the supply of houses of any cost will somehow magically make housing more affordable for ordinary Kiwis.
“He is in cloud cuckoo land.”
