Current Affairs is going back to the future, with the release of a new on line current affairs show called Waatea 5th Estate.

It’s a discussion panel dedicated to giving as wide a range of perspectives as possible on issues affecting New Zealand. The nightly half hour show is a partnership between high profile Māori broadcaster, former MP Willie Jackson and left wing blogger, provocateur Martyn Bomber Bradbury.

Streaming live each night at 07:01 pm the timeslot is a chance for the public to see just what the mainstream channels aren’t telling you before clicking over to the real deal says Bradbury, “People are sick and tired of dumbed down tabloid trash served up as current affairs.”

“TPPA is a classic example of how main stream media silenced hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders by ignoring them.” Adds Bradbury

“Let’s not start with how mainstream totally ignores Māori issues or viewpoints.” Says Willie Jackson.

The pair see the web series broadcast on www.waateanews.com as a back to the future for current affairs.

The high profile political commentators both agree there’s a hunger for the old fashion in-depth, rational critique of serious issues. “These days more and more people are looking on line to get a wider broader critical view of events, unencumbered.” Says Bradbury.

The show will feature key figures from politicians, activists and academics, Māori and non-Māori.

The online world is a familiar place for the pair, Bradbury is Editor of popular blog site The Daily Blog with over 300k views a month. While Jackson is associated with www.waateanews.com the Award winning national Māori news service.

Waatea 5th Estate starts 22nd February.

  1. The fascists and ideologues have spent decades stamping out informed debate in NZ, and will not be at all happy.

  2. This is the start of getting our democracy back
    February 24 the fightback begins
Hope you can get good coverage and get the word out.
Give them hell its about time.

  3. Finally, we are getting the needed counter balance in reporting and discussion, to the defacto right wing, neoliberally soaked, superficial, infotainment style, commercially dominated trash reporting that most of our television, radio and print (incl. online MSM) now offer us.

Good on you guys, I am looking forward to the launch.

Democracy may see a chance for a revival in Aotearoa New Zealand, at long last.

  4. We will be all ready for the launch. Roll on 7:01 pm Feb 24.

Getting the truth out there at last. Something the establishment and its propaganda mechanism msm won’t like at all. No sir!

A few sleepless night are in store for the deceitful, lying tow-rags governing us! Great 🙂

  5. Hopefully http://www.waateanews.com ‘s internet infrastructure is up to what will surely be a massive increase in current bandwidth requirements. Or will you be using YouTube’s live streaming services? If it’s an in-house system, it might be susceptible to the GCSB (or other govt acronym) doing a DDOS style attack on it to make the site unusable for live streaming (adjusts tinfoil hat).

  6. If I see one fucking clown face-painting a four year old I’m outa there. If I see one hippy bouncing about as if they just invented bouncing? I’m outa there. If I see one moss encrusted bush lesbian ? I’m outa there. If I see one reformed red neck with age-wrinkled , tattooed arm skin? I’m outa there.

For Gods sake . Make it up-market. For God’s sake break the mould ! Make it classy. Pleeeeeease ! ? Fred Dagg did it well and once and for all but no more. How about Hip? Make the French envy us for our clothes. I want the Italians to come here to find out how to cook and fuck. I want the Spanish to yearn to speak our language. We’re small, we can only afford to be classy. Let the Americans keep their vulgarities. Let the British be cruel and spiteful. Let the Germans prance about stiffly hoping no one will notice how lonely they are. Let the Australians prey for an actual identity. Let the world look at us and say “ What the fuck is in that country’s water !? “ L.A. Film producers were known to ask “ What goes on down there for you Kiwis? You make amazing stuff happen and there’s only how many of you? Amazing . “ That was said. I’m serious.

It’s not in the hours we work. It’s not in the things we do. It’s almost indefinable … It’s as though we’re blessed. And because of that and ironically we attract the biggest cunts to fuck our shit right up. Isn’t that interesting actually? We’re a tiny country and yet we often hit the world stage. Somethings up and we should ride that particular wave baby.

Good old The Daily Blog. Happy launch day. Big love to you guys. Sharpen your pencils and show no fear . ( Truman Capote . RIP dear inspiration . )

Sorry about the lovely cunt word. I will understand if you edit accordingly. xxx

You’re not living in Paekakariki are you @ Countryboy?
If you are – it is possible to get past all that and survive, and begin to understand how it all evolved. (Let ’em die in peace – there are far worse to have to contend with: e.g. the ideological neo-lib)

  7. Just in time as today 70 Editorial jobs go to overseas at Fairfax (to an ominious named “Pagemasters” company in some unknown place) probably a nerve centre in US Corporate world so Martyn couldn’t have planned the beginning of a Media we should appropriately call ” The peoples voice”.

Yes the control. freaks at the “Corporate control media HQ” will hate this free peoples voice that will say what we all feel needs to be heard finally.

Our NGO a long standing public affairs group Established in 2002 would want to also present our issues on this media please Martyn when you can arrange it please.

    https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-zealand/another-70-fairfax-jobs-axed-in-nz.html

Another 70 editorial jobs are to go at Fairfax Media in New Zealand as the company outsources some of its production.

Fairfax is moving subediting work for its Australian mastheads to Pagemasters.

“Today we briefed the approximately 70 full-time equivalent staff in New Zealand that would be affected by a proposal to move editorial production work they perform for Australian metro mastheads to a third-party provider, Pagemasters, which would operate from both New Zealand and Australia,” a Fairfax Media spokesperson said.

The proposed new arrangements would provide Fairfax additional flexibility and savings, the spokesperson said.

    • Two brilliant articles in todays Wake up New Zealand. how the internet is succeeding in informing people of way to fight back.
How Nz is following other ruined countries, leaders raise huge debts, then
open the doors to looters to strip countries of assets just as Key is doing to nz.
Well done for starting a video channel to inform the public of whats happening, because no other news source will, i will spread the word.

  8. “The show will feature key figures from politicians, activists and academics, Māori and non-Māori. Given that it’s online social technology
The online world is a familiar place for the pair, Bradbury is Editor of popular blog site The Daily Blog with over 300k views a month.

Looks like this post could use your editorial services, Bomber.

  9. The high profile political commentators both agree there’s a hunger for the old fashion in-depth, rational critique of serious issues.

Thank-you, thankyou Willie Jackson and Martyn Bradbury. I still occasionally tune in to TV1 and TV2 news and their off-siders ‘Seven Sharp’ and ‘Story’ just to remind myself how appalling and stupifying our MSM channels have become.

Btw, you will need to do some public advertising so that potential watchers are aware of your existence.

    • Agree Anne,

Martyn needs to be known as our Kiwi hero as he has never left his station when things got ugly as a true hero would do.

A asset to NZ he is.

  10. Martyn, any chance of your new current affairs programme appearing on a Freeview channel?

That would be really awesome if it could!

    All success with it.

  11. Very good, I watched the first live stream with Willie and you, Martyn. This is what we need, and more of it. What is a worry though is the fact, that only a small section of the population will know of this program and will have watched it today.

The MSM still dominates and continues the dumbing down of public thinking, so there are even less and less people seriously interested in political issues of the day, and the bulk are still uninformed, yes, maybe will not even be interested.

We must continue spreading info, and we must continue hammering the MSM for their appalling job in not doing much reporting, certainly not doing investigative journalism.

So I will continue watching this Waatea 5th Estate when I can, keep it up, it is what many of us have been hungering for.

  12. I am waiting to see John Key or Steven Joyce appear on the programme so they can defend the TPPA.
After all, to be fair all points of view must be given equal opportunities otherwise we are no better than National sycophants like Hosking and Henry..
    Yeah right!
    Those clowns wouldn’t dare!
It is different when you have to face real debates instead of pseudo-debates stage-managed by your lapdogs.
