Benefit suspensions drop after new policy
The number of people whose benefits are suspended or cancelled each day has dropped by more than a fifth in just a matter of weeks, the Social Development Minister Carmel Sepuloni says.
…on the day when it’s announced that IRD and WINZ have screwed up and are now charging beneficiaries hundreds, if not thousands of dollars we get this pitiful claim that the toxic culture of WINZ has somehow been ‘modified’…
Parents who have had Family Tax Credit payments administered by Work and Income are now receiving letters from the Inland Revenue Department demanding re-payment of alleged debts arising from errors made by Work and Income.
Kirstie, a woman interviewed by Newshub (see 6.00pm TV3 News, Tuesday 26 June) has received a letter from IRD stating, “Our records show we haven’t received payment for your working for Families Tax Credits in full” and that this dates back to March 2014. IRD has told Kirstie she owes them $568.18 and she is being charged interest on this amount.
Another woman has received a letter from IRD stating she owes IRD over $7000.

Also changed the disability allowance so people who are in relationship can get a benefit and also afford to buy all their unfunded medicines . Instead of having to beg online or get friends to borrow pay day loans.
I am sick of the stress that is inflicted on my young friend because of the bullshit relationship rule and the bullshit disability allowance.
so right there Geoff. The couple rate is a terrible feature of the benefit system. MSD justified it with pathetic reasoning that on average couples are better off than singles. They also think it is appropriate to reduce assistance to couples because of their alleged economies of scale LOL
It is a show pony exercise, I fear, not much will change for most, window dressing does not do it for me, Carmel Sepuloni is not trusted by so many beneficiaries, nor are Labour, and so it goes.
At least they are a tiny bit less hostile to beneficiaries, that is the only ‘credit’ this government deserves.

It is abundantly obvious to me just how many contracts are leaving Nat selected Minimi’s in place so try as she might Sepuloni can’t cleanse the place just yet.
I want it all and I want it now has to wait for the real world first to catch up!
Although I agree with Aaron, I think Carmel has made an improvement for beneficiaries who are shat on by the current system – plus starting to rein in the nasties in Winz who do the shitting. The organisation acting for beneficiaries who are unfairly cut off are pleased with this small step in the right direction – which Carmel says is the beginning of a big overhaul. I want an internal investigation to sus out the Winz workers who enjoy depriving beneficiaries of their rights. Get rid of their methods and them if they won’t change.
Carmel works hard for the poor in her electorate. She gets the biggest vote of any MP. She’s genuine in a political environment full of neo-liberal wankers. I think encouraging/pushing her to do the big things would be more productive than blasting her Martyn.
