Govt’s puberty blockers move attracts strong reactions

The imminent pause on puberty blockers has provoked strong feelings on both sides of the debate: supporters say it will keep children safe, while critics warn it will cause “profound distress”.

Cabinet has signed off on plans to halt new prescriptions for puberty blockers for young people with gender dysphoria from mid-December, pending the results of a major clinical trial in the United Kingdom, expected in 2031.

The drugs – known as gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues – would remain available for people already using them for gender dysphoria, as well as for other medical conditions such as early-onset puberty, endometriosis, and prostate cancer.

Groan.

In 2014-2020 the middle class woke ruled the cultural roost with their cancel culture social media Lynch mobs alienating everyone who didn’t agree with their pure temple identitarianism.

The woke’s cancel culture bullshit alienated vast groups of voters and drove them into the arms of the reactionary right.

It was madness because no family in poverty is sitting around the kitchen table cancelling each other for misusing pronouns, they are trying to work out how to pay the fucking bills.

Our Middle Class woke with their fourth wave feminist allies and non-binary activists  turned the trans debate radioactive with a humility bordering on Māo’s cultural revolution.

I was one of the few on the NZ Left to point this all out, for which I have been cancelled by the Wellington Woke a dozen times.

The cultural backlash to woke victimhood and intersectionalism erupted with Trump’s victory and the woke fever over the Left finally broke but we are all living with the hangover.

When it comes to the trans debate, I’m old fashioned.

Being comfortable in your own skin and knowing oneself is one of the most important human journeys there is. The idea that there are some men who believe they are women and some women who believe they are men is as uncontroversial to me as the range of eye, skin and hair colour in the human species.

I of course will respond to anyone by the pronouns and names they request out of basic human decency, but where I detract from the woke, and where I get threats to my pets from trans activists, is my position that you can’t actually force trans people into spaces for biological women.

I have no issue sharing prison, toilet or changing room spaces with a Trans person because most women transitioning into men don’t physically intimidate me, but I certainly see how that could be very intimidating to biological women.

For this position I am apparently transphobic according to the Wellington Woke.

This poisoned chalice of toxic culture war hate, that the middle class woke personally contributed to, has now been spat back by this Culture War Government with the decision to stop puberty blockers.

I absolutely agree that there needed to be more checks and balances on Puberty Blocker use…

…and the Cass Review successfully argued that there needed to be more research into puberty blockers, but the Cass Review also took into account the regret of those who had surgically transitioned and that’s just not something we have a hell of a lot of in NZ. Puberty Blockers alongside other treatments are the main ‘transitioning’ in NZ, where as the Cass Review had to take into account the growing number ion mostly young women who had transitioned surgically.

The reality is we don’t have the problems the UK had because we don’t have that many surgical transitions.

The pro-Trans groups argue that puberty blockers are used for other ailments so they are safe, but those other ailments aren’t about changing your gender, they are for cancer treatment or precocious puberty, so it’s not the same issue.

So yes, we need more research into puberty blockers and how they impact while limiting surgical transition to only those who truly require it, but what the Government has done here isn’t a medical decision, it’s a political one.

Only you, your guardian, your psychologist and your dr should be  involved in this discussion, what the fuck is the Government doing getting involved in medical care?

This is about using the resentment the middle class woke have generated and manufacturing that into a toxic culture war political attack on the trans community for the lowest gutter politics dog whistling.

This Government doesn’t give a shit about trans kids, they care about dog whistling to their reactionary right voters while pretending to care about Trans kids.

I am the first to argue that the way the Trans and their woke middle class allies have gone about trying to secure their rights has been counterproductive and deeply alienating, but we can’t allow their idiocy to doom an entire group of people.

This is a political culture war attack and the State shouldn’t be deciding your medical needs, that’s between you and your doctor!

  1. When the state is paying for the treatment it’s not unusual that they will want to decide who receives it. There are problems with that sort of control which has resulted in a struggling health system although I would call gender transition a social issue rather than a serious health need that requires priority. As you say we don’t want this turned into an election issue that reduces votes for the Left.

      1. Are you taking into account the ones who have gone through with your child abuse treatment that have gone on to commit suicide because it didn’t cure their mental illness? Nope? didn’t think so. I read somewhere its actually higher than the ones that don’t get the abusive treatment. I don’t remember exactly where i read it but I’m quite sure its true.

  4. When 4 year old’s are defining themselves as non binary I have a problem. Not so much the non binary stuff, two non binary that find each other, to me is great, go for ya life.. each to their own. Its the fact that non binary parents somehow have non binary children. You can’t tell me that’s not parents influencing their children. Same goes with trans parent. Maybe 1-2 per thousand are trans (or non binary) but somehow they have trans children.. really? I call bulshit.

  6. If people think there is such a thing as a gentle delaying of a normal puberty with no side effects by using GNRH , you are incredibly naive.
    This hormone is used in cattle reproduction and has well known feedback mechanisms that affect other hormones in the body.
    Puberty artificially delayed is puberty altered.
    There will be court cases over the human carnage caused by this.

    So let’s go and do try and keep up, it’s not that hard.

    If puberty blockers are unsafe, then this change means the current government are happy exposing non-trans individuals to a dangerous medicine.

    There are more non-trans individuals using puberty blockers than trans individuals.

    Therefore they are protecting trans individuals while throwing the “normies” under the bus.

    And a whole gang of baboons are celebrating this as a win. You’ll see them upthread, smearing dung on their faces.

    In reality, no medicines or medical procedures are 100% efficacious, safe or free from side effects. If you dispute this fact you’re living in a different world.

    The baboons upthread better not howl if our evangelical “Christian” government decide that all contraceptives are unsafe (because they are) and ban them.

    1. It’s not the same and you know its not. When puberty blockers are used to treat life threatening “physical” illnesses they do so because not using them is worse than using them. That doesn’t apply to children with a clinically defined “mental health” problem called gender Dismorphia. Children don’t understand the full impact of these drugs on their bodies and their minds and the people pushing them are so caught up in their own world that to not defend this child abuse means they have to admit they are wrong. We all know how Trans react when challenged.. with violence.

  10. Martyn ; don’t do that. Have you ever known anyone with a kid who is quite firm from an early age they are in the wrong body? I have. They want to change their name but everything recorded about them is from their original birth and gender records. When they go for appointments it is the original name, even if little kids are saying “I a boy” from the age of 3 and keep insisting on it. They are prevented from doing “boys” or “girls” sports. They want to dress like a boy or girl and get bullied if the school isn’t sensitive about this issue. If it were my child I would rely on the best possible medical and professional advice from those who deal with this, and not some populist like Peters or for that matter, the Miniature of Health. It is a difficult topic for those of those who haven’t experienced this. You and I are lucky in that our kids have not so we should not be judgmental. We should be supportive, compassionate and ffs stop calling those who are the woke middle class

      The mystery, to me, is why some people assume that the mental gender should always match the physical genitalia. Human embryology, particularly in the area of neurodevelopment, is highly complex and it should not come as a surprise to any rational, educated person that sometimes the mental gender doesn’t match the genitalia.

  11. Far from being a cultural war the question of gender is grounded in material history of the sexes. Women originated human society roughly 100,000 years ago when their control of reproduction reduced men to sperm donors. Men spent millennia getting their revenge. Women were enslaved, their bodies objectified and their resistance repressed. Fast forward to today the capitalist class system is dying on all fours. It fears revolution from below in which women will play a key role. Cue in trans ideology as the post modern patriarchy, and eliminate women as an historic sex class. Men as the ultimate enemy of women, become legal women. A smart way to divide and rule! To avoid this some women become legal men and join in the women bashing. The way out of this impasse is for women to fight back as a sex class, joining their brothers and sons, against the great hoax of gender, abolishing it and the class oppression it enforces. It will take a social revolution to undo the history of women’s oppression. But when that happens we will be able to restore the historic equality between the sexes to create a future socialist society without class divisions.

  12. Gender affirming therapy derives from queer theory, not medical science. But these lies have been shoehorned into both our health and education systems.

    It does not belong in either – which are to be data driven, and having been contaminated with postmodern lies, both are ripe for reform.

    Stopping puberty blockers is a first step, one that may allow a handful of medical charlatans to survive professional review, for prescribing them conflicts with Hippocrates’ admonition: First do no harm.

  13. The problem with puberty blockers is 100% of children prescribed them go on to take cross sex hormones.
    A boy taking blockers from a young age will end up with a micro penis. And later take estrogen.
    A girl on blockers will end up with a lifelong issue with bone density that will see her in a wheel chair. She will take testosterone and have a deep voice and facial hair, a receeding hairline and substantial weight gain.
    Prior to the use of blockers 87% of childrens dysphoria resolved itself after puberty. It seems puberty is what is needed to resolve most cases of dysphoria.
    That figure of desistance comes from over 500 cases taken on by psychologist/sexoligist Kenneth Zucker, before the wait and see approach went out of vogue and aggressive medical interventions were sold to Drs and parents along with the idea young people would kill themselves if not medicalised.
    I dont know if any of you have kids, but they ideate suicide.for a variety of reasons going through puberty, especially if they are gay or aspergers or adhd. Which amazingly, 60-70% of trans kids are. All figures easily verified by research on the Tavistock Clinc, Kenneth Zucker, Michael Bailey, or any number of medical professionals not caught up in this bizarre cause celibre.

      But given that it would require breaching the medical privacy of a huge number of people, it’s obvious you’re lying.

    1. It’s not about trans kids not being accepted. It’s about not allowing them to be permanently effected by irreversible drug therapy before they are old enough to make an informed decision. It’s become quite clear that some parents are so caught up in their own ideology they will encourage kids to basically self harm. If a parent does not or will not protect their own children, society has an obligation to step in.
