Winston meltdown over Nazi explanation – an old man mess of his own making

Winston Peters erupts as he doesn’t back down on Nazi Germany comments despite Christopher Luxon warning

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says he is “not backing down one iota” and will not apologise for comments he made linking race relations in New Zealand to Nazi Germany.    

But he might just have to back down from his theme tune as Chumbawamba, the band who wrote the hit ‘Tubthumping’, read his comments and have told him to cease and desist from using it.   

In a statement to Stuff, Chumbawumba’s guitarist wrote it was “entirely odd that the ‘I get knocked down…’ refrain is being used by Peters as he barks his divisive, small-minded, bigoted policies during his recent speeches”.  

Chumbawumba stuck the knife in further, saying the band doesn’t share any of Peters’ ideas on race relations and the song was “not about rich politicians trying to win votes by courting absurd conspiracy theories and spouting misguided racist ideologies”.  

Peters on Tuesday evening said the party had not “received any cease-and-desist phone call, email, letter, or anything of the sort from the former band nor any other representative – and we don’t expect to”.

It’s not just the soundtrack but the speech itself that’s causing Peters problems, particularly his likening of race relations to Nazi Germany.   

“I’ve seen that sort of philosophy before. I saw it in Nazi Germany, we all did,” Peters said on Sunday.    

He is not backing down despite being spoken to by the Prime Minister.  

“I am not listening to either of yours’s crap,” he said on Tuesday.  

He accused the media of misrepresenting him in a ranting media release, claiming he never mentioned co-governance or the Holocaust.   

But he did! He directly compared Labour’s policies on co-governance to Nazi Germany and then has attempted to swivel, deflect and counter claim his own words!

Peters made the comments during a section of his speech labelled ‘Labour Government Failures’.   

“The insidious creep of racist co-governance,” Peters said before then making the comments about Nazi Germany.   

Asked by Newshub afterwards if it was appropriate to compare co-governance to Nazi Germany, Peters said: “Yes, it is.” 

…now we have the embarrassing spectacle of old man Winston screaming he didn’t say what he fucking said…

But by the following morning the story had shifted, and Peters was claiming it had nothing to do with co-governance and everything to do with Rawiri Waititi.   

…HE WASN’T TALKING ABOUT THE MĀORI PARTY – HE WAS TALKING ABOUT LABOUR’S CO-GOVERNANCE!!!!

He can’t even keep track of his own insults!

I get the feeling he needs adult diapers at this stage of his political career.

Look – there are enormous challenges facing our country, so how on earth is Winston as Deputy Prime Minister of this nation falsely comparing Labour to the Nazis and repeating his ‘Big Lie’ that the entire mainstream media were bribed by the Journalism fund (because there was a funding note by an over zealous woke Wellington cockhead inside NZ on Air), how is any of that helping the radioactive political polarisation?

It’s not helping at all and NZ First voters love that. They have no interest in building because most lack the intellectual capacity to imagine building, all they have is spite and piss and malice.

These are book burners, not library builders.

This is about revenge for these fragile NZ First egos.

It’s like a Party full of Samantha Markle’s.

All self pitying grievance with none of the justification.

NZ First will go up in the polls because there are so many antivaxx Kiwis lost down rabbit holes now, but Winston can’t give the Conspiracy Swamp Kingdom he now rules what they want, and what they want is a Nuremberg styled trial followed by public hangings of Jacinda and her entire family.

See, I don’t think Winnie can give them the lynching they believe they are due and that the hate he is legitimising will turn and gloriously bite him in the arse.

Watching Winston in a tizzy of his own making would be hilarious if he and his ilk weren’t such dangerous Brown Shirts themselves!

  5. I don’t mean to divert the thread but we need to ask the question of Tova O’Brien; By using this occasion as an opportunity to attack the Greens and the Maori Party is Tova O’Brien a journalist, or a political hack?

    In her column on Winston Peters accusing the previous government of being Nazis for their policy on co-governance, Tova O’Brien rightly says, ” it was wrong”. O’Brien then goes on to say that it is wrong for the Greens and Maori Party “when they’ve done the same.”
    O’Brien does not give any example of where the Greens and the Maori Party have done this, so we cannot judge whether their use of this comparison and who it was directed at, was wrong, or even if it occurred at all. Only O’Brien’s opinion that the Maori Party and the Greens are “wrong” in making this comparison. O’Brien does not say who the Greens and Maori Party directed this comparison to.

    Taken in isolation, without giving any example, O’Brien accusing the Maori Party and the Greens of using the Nazi comparison wrongly, is simply a slur, and not journalism.

    I agree with O’Brien that throwing around the accusation of ‘Nazism’ should not be done lightly.
    The accusation of Nazism has been used more than once to justify violence.

    Accusations of Nazism have been used by the President of Russia to justify his country’s attack on Ukraine, an accusation which Ukraine claims is false. Ukraine has taken a case against the Russian Federation for making a falsie accusation of genocide and Nazism to the International Court of Justice. This is an example of how serious false accusations of Nazism should be taken.
    Equally, accusations that someone is making false accusations of Nazism also have to be taken seriously.

    O’Brien has some questions to answer;

    What is O”Brien’s attempt to slur the Greens and Maori Party motivated by?

    Does it have any reference to the Greens and the Maori Party rightfully calling out the mass slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza a genocide?

    Is Tova O’Brien abandoning journalistic objectivity to attempt to use this occasion to conflate and lump the the Greens and Maori Party in with Winston Peters?

    Should we be concerned?

    I think we should be concerned. O’Brien needs to front up and tell us where the Greens and the Maori Party have wrongly made this comparison..

      re Putins accusations of Nazism in Ukraine back in 2014 BBC, Vox and other world media were reporting it as a fact.

    2. Yes, Ukraine did (try to) make that case- and the court rejected it because the Zelensky regime is clearly engaged in genocide against the Russian speaking population of Donetsk and Luhansk.

  9. I’m surprised no-one has mentioned the rapid and serial imbibement of whiskey, cider and lager beverages from Chumbawamba’s song, but they seem relevant here, so I will. Do you think that section of “Tubthumping” has any relevance to events, beyond mere conjecture about its causal relationship to Winston’s rhetoric? Perhaps Chippy was right about inebriated embarrassing elderly relatives after all.
