  1. Rio Tinto will not pay one cent of the $250 million decommissioning costs for Tiwai Point. This will play out exactly the same way as Tamarind oil company in New Plymouth. The local company, Tamarind Taranaki was placed in liquidation with debts of $480m and the parent company based in Malaysia walked away from that and from the potential 100’s of million clean up costs for their oil fields. Rio Tinto will do the same thing.

  2. Isn’t this where NZ is supposed to sue Rio Tinto using the so called disputes courts of the TTP?
I’ve full confidence that the process dominated my multi national corporations will see it our way.

  3. Remember Pike River, nobody in jail over 29 preventable deaths. The corporates in charge of Rio Tinto should be advised that they will be jailed if any harm comes from their waste… funny how personal responsibility to the board of directors and executive team will incentivise them to do the right thing more than a kind face. And the Kiwi taxpayers should not be paying a CENT to remove it.

  4. Martyn – love your blogs and comments but please proofread before you press enter.

  5. The waste product in Mataura should not be called a classy name like “Ouvea Premix.” That is the sort of name Matthew Hooton would concoct. It is poisonous shit by any other name and if it was easy to get rid of and could readily be reprocessed into something useful like fertiliser, it would have been moved on long ago.

  6. I am looking forward to a further slagging of Rio Tinto in your blog… Did you know that the old Ministry of Defence building next to Shell Mex house on the river Thames London (in front of Cleopatra’s Needle ..an egyptian obelisk) houses two luxury apartments at the top ..valued at over 300 million pounds sterling each in 2013? and who might own and live there you wonder, well the top man, the CEO of Rio Tinto of course.
Sam Williams in his vlog covers this well…

Also Sean Hross (on youtube) believes the Pharaohs still rule today…as I do!!

  8. Dump it in Rio Tinto,s boardroom, all of it ! Export it back to Australia where it came from. The only reason that it is here is because of government inspired corporate socialism.
