China proposes sending new Antarctic base via New Zealand
China wants to build a new Antarctic base, not far (in Antarctic terms) from New Zealand’s Scott Base.
It would be China’s second base on the New Zealand side of Antarctica.
In documents sent to parties to the Antarctic Treaty, including New Zealand, China said that the construction of the base could mean more visits of Chinese ships to New Zealand ports as they lie between the Port of Shanghai, where the prefabricated base will leave from, and the site of the base at Cox Point, Marie Byrd Land.
The Chinese just encroached into the Realm of NZ with a secret Cook Islands deal.
The Chinese just sailed 2 warships plus a supply ship (with the possibility of a nuclear submarine) with more missile firepower than the entire Australian Navy combined into the Tasman Sea to test live fire weapons.
WHY would we agree to then allow the Chinese to use our ports to expand their presence in Antartica?

If we keep the Chinese from supporting their Antarctic bases from here then we have to stop the Americans supporting their Antarctic bases from here too.
If we don’t want to get caught in the middle of their superpower rivalry, New Zealand will need to suspend both Chinese and American Antarctic support operations run from this country.
We ban one or we ban both, we host one we host both.
As long as we host only one of these two superpowers Antarctic missions, we can never achieve internationally recognised neutral status.
And only internationally recognised neutral status can protect this country in event of war between them.
As for the Chinese holding live fire military exercises to the South of Australia, America hosts live fire RIMPAC military exercises to the north of Australia every two years.

Those are all false equivalents, Pat. That’s not access, that’s a levy that we pay to China and America for being a global citizen.
There is no amount of legal contractual neutrality agreements or anything else that can prevent China or America from using New Zealand as a launching pad into Antarctica and or our resources for that matter.

While I can understand your concerns about China the USA is going to be a greater threat to our freedom of choice so the recent voyage of a few Chinese warships is no reason to not sell our services to them for any Antarctic work.

I don’t buy the paranoia around China. They are not a credible military threat based on intention, economics and logistics. It just makes no sense – they are the worlds biggest trading partner – something they achieved in 40 years without military action.
China gains nothing – in it’s own terms – by engaging in military action any where, given the likely damage to trade and it’s economy.
