  1. New Zealand Government is wise honouring a promise to the nationalist New Zealand First party, to thaw trade-relations with Russia.

    Why?

We need a balaned trade policy and mearly signing up to TPP11 is not balanced at all.

Firstly Japan is firmly suppoportive of the draconian (ISDS) being held over our Government as it is in Japans interest to protect their investments.

Christ we are living now in a financlial war where the biggest purse buys all the other countries without a shot fired!!!!!!

No No No, – we now must carve out our own best deals for our people and not be owned and dominated by bigger, richer, biggotted countries that could not give a damn what there ‘investments’ do to the host country or its people and environment.

We should never accept other countries will to destroy our country for profit.

I’m not sure what argument it is that you’re making here. But I suspect that maybe you’re conflating the US and Russia, with regard to their modus operandi in respect of trade.

Know this: the US will put a man on Jupiter before it’ll give us a trade deal – free or otherwise – that’s worth anything at all. On the other hand, Putin is known for his Westphalian approach to foreign policy, and I’d guess that he’d take a similar line in respect of trade. If the Kremlin will agree to resume trade talks, NZ should grab the opportunity with both hands.

Remember that NZ will always be a small polity; therefore we will usually be negotiating trade deals with polities much larger than our own. Trade with Russia will be just that: trade. No strings of a military nature attached.

I remind you that NZ traded with the Soviet Union, but was never asked for military assistance with, for instance, Afghanistan. Ditto trade with Iran, another polity much larger than our own. And a theocracy to boot.

    1. It is Chris.
I really hope Curwen had a bit of fun in student life winding up a haughty Hoadley or two.

  2. But you do realise Curwen, that what ever it is THE RUSSIANS DID IT!!! just follow our joke news media.

    1. Ah – the Negotiations.

The problem with Trade Deals, is that the biggest swines want the biggest massive ridiculous pay outs.

So if you do a deal to sell a packet of reduced milk powder ala Fonterra, the Big guys want to purchase your whole land, houses, and industries for a total payment of approx $USD nothing.

So, our former Government headed by a particularly stupid Prime Minister and Cabinet, sold off everything they possibly could.

As a result we do not own our banks – except a small one – we do not own our Forests- we do not own our produce – we have horribly polluted water right throughout the country, ill health, and low wages. We do not even own our parking stations.

We do have quite a lot of tourists come through the country, but we don’t build toilets and bathrooms for them and they piss and shit on the side of the roads.

Our former government liked that very much. So did our deputy Prime Minister.

Add to that, we have a helluva a drug problem, because parents don’t bother caring for their children.

Huge numbers of Maori people are in prison for very serious crimes. They have no idea of leading a proper normal life. Oddly enough, Maoris blame everyone but themselves for that.

They are the greatest number of prisoners in New Zealand, but only 15% of the population. At the same time, it must be said that there are many many wonderful Maori people.

We must not be walked over by wealthy foreigners and wealthy politicians. We need to quietly go about building our once wonderful New Zealand.

  3. Christ Curwen!
This post (as many of your others) raises so many issues that in and of themselves are worthy of further analysis.
You could run a line on anything from the problems MSM journalists (title used advisedly) face, under the influence of their masters; to the lack of sophistication in NZ immigration policy (devised, implemented and enforced by various WASPs – many ‘imported’); to the state of our public service; to so many others…….
Then there’s always the ussue, (going forward), of intent and the motivation for the post. Preaching to the converted is really an exercise in pushing shit uphill. (A worthy cause that actually progresses SFA)
Appealing to the already ideologically entrenched, or challenging their bullshit and comfort zones is like (loik) challenging TLDRers (who tire of a multitude of evidence in favour of alternative feks going forwid), or battling with a 10 Bridges, or an overdosed Benefit, or a Xero’d Joyce, or an English, still trying to come to terms with the rythym method, or a Tolley or a Finlayson (fearful that their various ‘faiths’ might be in conflict with one another , whether they offer personal protection to their physical and mental wellbeing, and that they might turn out to be complete bullshit).

  4. An excellent article that was a pleasure to read! Auckland University has long had a problem of quality control in the appointment of some of its associate professors.I had to suffer the same incompetency and brain deadness in my day.Professor Stephen Hoadley is just the last of a long line.Looking at the recent interview regarding relations with Russia , it is instructive that Hoadley is completely oblivious to the fact that everything that Russia has done in the Ukraine has been reactive to actions of the U.S.He does not acknowledge the coup d’etat carried out by the CIA; using five billion dollars to organize the overthrow of a democratically elected government. He does not acknowledge the use of fully fledged Nazis to accomplish this.He does not acknowledge that this was all done so that Nato could take over the Naval base in the Crimea, that had been an intrinsic part of Russia until recently, and that had been a part of Russia since Catharine the Great. This was done to weaken Russia and to attempt to continue the hegemony of the U.S Empire. Putin snookered this unsuccessful attempt to play the Great Game!
Hoadley has been in the U.S. Navy. As well as being cerebrally challenged, as illustrated by his poor understanding of the recent events in the Ukraine , Hoadley has long been a fully fledged jackboot slobberer of the U.S. Empire. All narratives he describes are coloured by this deficiency.
Thus there is no intelligent reason not to fully engage with Russia, in all respects!!

  5. Isn’t that what free trade is supposed to be about? Unrestricted trade?

NZ should be neutral and trade with everyone. Not have little cliques while pretending to be a free trade leader.

Also NZ should be prepared to say NO if the agreement could be detrimental to future Kiwis or our environment or our IP. Don’t sell out the next generation.

Look at the China trade agreement. Chinese have been allowed to buy the farms and they make the money exporting former NZ owned produce and export the profits. They bought the farms not the milk or the butter and everyone seems to think that’s a great success! NZ can not buy Chinese farms or assets. I think most of the investments of Kiwis into China have tanked but the Chinese have profited.

Locals now pay even more for NZ produced but foreign owned products! We are becoming a banana republic.

We import people to support and sell our country assets – somehow it’s not going to end well.

Vulnerable people are the canary’s at present but it’s going to spread to the working, middle, upper and even the rich locals because the health and educations services will stop working and as the social welfare stops working everyone resident will be effected by the down stream effect.

I’d say National’s biggest exports were NZ passports to anybody that could fill in the paperwork. Their dream is to bankrupt NZ so that their free market ways can be implemented and the last assets of NZ sold off in fire sales to their mates.

  6. Live long and prosper, Curwen!

The past year or so has been a fascinating ride. I never thought I would be a NZFirst supporter a year ago, although I had some respect for Winston and Co. I was concerned about anti-Asian sentiment. But I don’t think that’s more than skin deep. New Zealanders are not racist in the context of a world where racial epithets and skin colour comparisons are the norm. Try living in Asia or South America by comparison!

Geopolitical machinations make it essential that New Zealand take a “NZ First” approach, and stop, besides waiting on the sidelines to be picked, to stop fostering “innovation” through corporate welfare when the beneficiaries will take their businesses to other stock exchanges soon after they have been incubated.

  7. “And that their time as would-be charlatan Chakravartins is rather swiftly drawing to a close.

Good Riddance. And disregard the shamelessly perfidious ‘talking heads’ who dare to say otherwise.

As we enter into the incoming Age of Multipolarity, New Zealand is already set to do very well by remaining *well* ahead of the curve.”

While my heart concurs with such sentiment my head continues to caution me with ‘power abhors a vacuum’…..and NZ wont be immune to such a storm irrespective.

  8. Russia is a repugnant regime and their actions in the Ukraine among other places should not go unremarked. But foodstuffs should not ever be a sanctioned item – the Swedes and Finns will not lose sleep over a few thousand tonnes of butter. If Kim Jong Un, presently running neck-and-neck with Trump for the title of world’s leading asshole, wanted to buy butter or apples we should sell it to him too. It’s a genuinely harmless thing to do and any country getting upset about it should mind their own business.

      1. John: “You chose to spend your life making excuses for the people who did this”

On that basis, we shouldn’t be looking for any sort of a trade deal with the US, just on the basis of this:
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waco_siege
Never mind all the deaths for which that polity has been responsible in South America, Southeast Asia, Middle East, etc….

  9. I’m for it, defrost those relations. I’m a fan of Russia’s news channel RT, which is probably the best international news channel in the world, IMO.

Russia still seems to be very much a oligarchy with deep social issues, but you have to start somewhere. As for Putin, good, bad or misunderstood – he is certainly thoughtful and well informed.

The lame-stream-media’s narrative about Russian hacking is pathetic and thinking people just roll their eyes.

Russia probably would pop the champagne corks if America had a financial collapse, saying that though, America has been using their clout (US dollar and sanctions) to harass Russia for years.

I have been saying for years now we should be exporting our dairy products to Russia! Anybody remember that survey earlier in the year were they ask us Kiwis if we cared more about our relations (trade really) with America or China? FYI, Kiwis said China.

John Key and his government were nobs toward Putin and Russia so maybe Russia doesn’t even want to deal with us. As for our traditional allies – got a problem, say it! Otherwise, stop being so chincy with the party favors (free trade deals) OR just live with it.

I really dislike the word ‘lobotomized’ but it really sums up reporters who chant “Russian Hacking, Russian Hacking” night after night … it really goes against the sensibilities of us Kiwis too, considering NZ is a member of the 5 Eyes and the collection of data on our citizenry was a big issue not long ago.

Commonsense comments there: I quite agree.

  10. Bring on the trade with Russia and China. As for the EU opposing NZ freeing up trade with Russia. I would bet in a few years time Germany and France will have got over their present hypocrisy and are donkey deep in trade with Russia.
Putin is one of the few world statesmen that has had the courage to stand up to the murderous war mongering of NATO and the USA.
As for the link to the picture of the Beslian disaster thoughtfully provided above by John. Putin acknowledged it was badly handled and the rescuers made serious mistakes trying to save the hostages.
To me this was a genuine terrorist attack so the terrorist hostage takers must
bear the ultimate responsibility for the deaths. This contrasts with the 9/11 supposed terrorist attack in New York (2996 deaths) resulting from the incompetence of the US intelligence agencies and that is putting a positive spin on it.
I actually believe they were complicit, as I believe the US intelligence agency was complicit in the shooting down of MH17 by the Ukrainians.
Cui Bono. The 9/11 attack gave the US the excuse to go to war in Iraq of all places, Iraq who had nothing to do with 9/11, and MH17 gave the US the excuse to demonise and sanction Russia, preventing growing trade with Russia by Europe and yes NZ, and growing the market for American weapons and they hoped to export their oil and gas to Europe ousting Russia from this market..
Both incidents have been followed by enquiries notable for their lack of transparency and inclusiveness. Who ever heard of an aircraft accident enquiry that did not accept evidence from one of the involved parties.
Trump for all his faults has inherited an America that is governed by a deeply corrupt corporate/intelligence agency/banker cabal. That is why their, “bought and paid for”, media, and to our shame, our media cannot let a day go by without some denigration of the US President who after all was elected by nearly 50% of the US population. Note: Putin was diplomatic and polite when the western media attempted to get him to join the anti-Trump party.
So go Winston. NZ can lead the world in establishing a more open honest freely trading world
