Whatever you think of Leo Molloy – this assault charge against a Police Officer reeks of abuse of power
Leo Molloy named as businessman accused of assaulting police
An Auckland hospitality magnate facing charges of assaulting a police officer and intentionally obstructing another officer after an incident at a bar can now be named.
Leo Molloy appeared briefly at the Auckland District Court this morning where his lawyer, Quentin Duff, said his client’s application for name suppression would not be pursued.
Molloy has been charged with assaulting a police officer and intentionally obstructing another officer after an incident at a bar on July 15.
Judge Kathryn Maxwell remanded the one-time failed Auckland mayoralty candidate at large to reappear in April. He has previously pleaded not guilty to both charges.
Ugh.

Look.
You can all have a billion good reasons to not like Leo and I don’t know ANYTHING about this nonsense event and I could be embarrassed if evidence is released showing Leo being completely unreasonable and actually assaulting a Police Officer and intentionally obstructing another officer and you can point to all the things he’s said in the past and draw unfavourable comments.
But does it honestly ring true that Leo, all five foot four nothing of him would actually assault a Police Officer and obstruct another?
Isn’t there a lot more to this story than the arrest and charge?
Leo can be a frustrating and very temperamental soul at the best of times, but assaulting a cop?
Come on.
This reeks of abuse of power and I’ve seen enough trumped up charges by cops to not trust them as far as I can throw them.
We might like to laugh at Leo and tease him for this, but no one should have the State use the cops to be arseholes and pursue trumped up charges.
I’m open to being wrong here, but we all innocent until proven guilty (which is what I argued with Golriz) and those legal rights are extended to everyone, even those we don’t like and already believe are guilty!

Molloy wants to shed due process and wants to hang brown people from lamposts. He also cheered when George Floyd was executed and wanted to be able to turn firehoses on homeless people. He also wants LGBT’s strung with piano wire and lets his guests grope his workers . He can get the taste of his own medicine. What’s more. He can get fucked.
They should have just charged him with wanking in a public space and being a burden on the state.

I seem to recall him being a pretty pushy sort, and not long on manners. A push is an assault these days – I’m sure a judge with find a wet bus ticket to slap him with if it was police punching down.
Technically, it ain’t that hard to assault someone, especially a cop. Given his size and um, maybe stroppiness, interesting to know what he got in return. Thankfully, we are not too much like the Yanks.
To be fair if the violent language translated in to physical by Molloy, he’s absolutely guilty.
I think Molloys history speaks for itself.
Obviously, this rotted-brained abuser isn’t going to kick off against someone who would have met Robert Peel’s criteria for hiring policemen, but there’s plenty of lady cops his height who the coward would (and it appears did) happily try to fight.

Yeah this is a weird case to defend and hang your hat on. He just had his name suppression lifted so whateva, like everyone else in a bar fight, he’ll be tried and etc….start slinging around shady stories once facts out, not before.

It’s worth keeping an eye on this case.
Obstruction is a popular go-to vexatious charge for some police who may want to fit someone up in order to intimidate or punish them. Often all they need is a single witness usually another member of their culture i.e. a fellow officer.
Leo could call on 2 or 300 of Nationals donors he hosted pre Christmas as witnesses.
