There are events that manage to crystallise a deeper rage and explode in a way few predict. Brash’s manufactured Orewa Speech, the ignorant madness towards the repeal of section 59 and the backlash against Kim Dotcom’s Moment of Truth are all perfect examples of this.
Which is why my ears pricked up when I heard this story ion TVNZ…
Some Northland farmers are warning they’ll turn to their guns to protect themselves and their stock amid a surge in cases of cattle being shot and butchered on the spot by rustlers.
…this is the kind of event that could crystallise in a way that explodes all kinds of tensions.
If a Northland Farmer shoots dead a person for stealing in some vigilante response to cattle rustling, there is the potential for real problems here.
Where is Nashy and the Jonsey? Hell even Kelvin Davis at this stage.
If Farmers are feeling so angry and anxious that they are openly talking about arming themselves, immediate leadership needs to step up. The last bloody thing anyone needs is someone shot dead for cattle rustling.
How much of this is genuine hunger by locals? How much is organised crime targeting meat for market? Whatever it is, there needs to be an immediate move to ease tensions because it doesn’t take much imagination to see how a death under these circumstances could cause an eruption along class and race lines.
Shane Jones wants to win Northland so he can become the heir apparent to the Leadership of NZ First, Kelvin doesn’t want to see more people sent to prison, and Nashy could probably do with time away from gym rage.
Deal with this now.
I think more people are furious over farmers and the Chinese stealing water in Canterbury, like the five fold water bottling we are looking down the barrel of in chch today.
That issue needs addressing quick smart it’s absolutely outrageous, I intend to reflect my displeasure at a complete lack of action at the next general election.
If someone has stolen some cattle call the police, simple.
By the time cops get anywhere near the meat is well packed away in the freezer. No chance of ever blocking anyone even if they bother to show up at all.
And the “rustlers” are of necessity armed with a high powered rifle. Is the cocky supposed to confront them with polite disapproval? and offer to dispose of the offal for them?

Meat is a luxury item. No one is stealing meat in this manner because they are genuinely hungry/desperate. There is literally low hanging fruit that is far easier to steal, and probably healthier too.
