Waatea News Column – The Politics of Kindness
There’s been a bit of debate online right now about what it means to have ‘New Zealand values’. NZ First have brought the issue up by wanting a ‘Values Test’ for migrants and John Tamihere has written some thoughts in his latest NZ Herald column, but I think the person who has done the most work on this is actually our Prime Minister when she spoke at the UN about a politics of kindness.
I believe that Egalitarianism and communal Māori collective values are the backbone of this nation, and if we combine those with a politics of active kindness, I believe we could forge something new and bold from the faded and broken promises of the old.
We could spend weeks and months arguing with one another about what values have shaped our past, and we could spend years debating angrily what it means to be a New Zealander but with the latest climate change report suggesting that the future is looking grim, perhaps we should spend more time focusing on the values right now that we should be adopting to be New Zealanders.
If politics of kindness were implemented, we wouldn’t see 50 lives taken each year from synthetic cannabis because we would be far more focused on helping those with that addiction. If politics of kindness were adopted, we wouldn’t accept 170 000 Māori being discriminated against in Australia and would fight for their equality against a country that has an appalling record with their own indigenous population. If we championed the politics of kindness, we wouldn’t punish people on welfare with enormous debts they will never pay able to pay back.
We are in desperate need of a revolution of kindness in every aspect of our personal lives and public society. The bullying, the cacophony of online abuse, the daily harassment that robs so many of dignity. Change won’t come easily, but it is something we are in desperate need of and it calls on the collective to engage because we are fast running out of time to work together to combat climate change.
Imagine a world where the politics of kindness was our shared value as a country, imagine how much further we could go to give everyone the true agency they deserve and overcome the selfishly induced corruptions atet plague us.
Imagine.
Let us then have images met with action, please, not just words and gestures, for all in need in NZ Inc. I am sure things will happen soon.
It is all good, but the world out there does not give a shit about our PM and her kindness and motherhood, there is a nasty and hostile world out there, where journalists get cut to pieces if they enter the consulate of their own country they may disagree with, and others get killed all the time, being reporters and so forth.
I and you are mortal also, we ALL die and will decompose at some time so we must value every minute of life there is, and respect life and also death, we need to get spiritually more aware.
So wake up, do not live in a fantasy land and get real.

@Marc The surest way to ensure we don’t get to a kinder world is if your message gets spread far and wide. A brief look at the history of the 20th century shows that the degree of kindness in politics has rise and fallen several times.
You seem to think you are offering us some kind of wisdom but you are just offering us the negation of hope. I can’t predict the future but it is apparent that the world took a lot of notice of what our PM had to say and if history is anything to go by the current decline in kindness will probably induce a counter reaction of decency.
And to counter a predictable straw man arguement – I don’t mean to saying we’re going to arrive at Nirvana anytime soon, just that there will be improvement
