WAATEA NEWS COLUMN: Matua Winston calls to put New Zealand First Again?
Matua Winston held his State of the Nation address over the weekend to constant interruptions by Palestinian activists protesting against the Foreign Minister’s lack of action over the perpetual war crimes being committed in Gaza.
Matua Winston called the protesters” left-wing fascists” and “communist, fascist, and anti-democratic losers” which is an odd turn of phrase for a senior political figure to be making while many civilians in Gaza and increasingly the West Bank are killed.
The issue is innocent civilians being killed in vast numbers, not that Matua Winston felt embarrassed and angry at being interrupted.
Apparently a Free Speech Champion like Matua Winston only supports free speech when he likes it.
That wasn’t the only odd moment in his State of the Nation Speech.
Matua Winston demanded that we ‘Make New Zealand First Again’, which is less MAGA and more MNZFA, which doesn’t roll off the tongue as easily.
Now I’m all for MNZFA, I agree with Matua Winston that we need to set our economic settings towards economic sovereignty and that we should invest in NZ products and businesses and we should limit the terrible power of trans nationals over our economy, yet instead of arguing for Making New Zealand First Again, Matua Winston trotted out odd culture war talking points from MAGA?
How can we Make New Zealand First Again if we allow trans national mining corporations to dig up climate change creating coal?
Why aren’t we talking local economic solutions to our issues and instead importing culture war talking points from America?
I, like Matua Winston, believe we need to Make NZ First Again, but I’m not sure exactly how our economic sovereignty is served by trashing the environment, enabling trans national companies more power and influence in the NZ economy or how importing divisive culture war rhetoric from Donal Trump helps ac hieve that economic sovereignty.
Matua Winston declared a ‘War on Woke’ which feels more like a ‘War to Wake up’ because this State of the Nation Speech felt very old and tired.
He is 80 an old he’s the Bob the first of NZ politics, outdated.
Destroying our environment and cultural relationship with Maori is not putting New Zealand first. More like putting Winstone first.
Winston is Old Zealand he is from a time when politicians believed they had a responsibility to run an economy with enough jobs that everyman could support a family, own a house and have a holiday at the beach.
He is the only politician that says “high wage economy”. It may be cronyisim but the provincial growth fund likely creates NZ owned economic growth.
He rightly points out the $22billion per year to be sent overseas as “carbon credits” is an economic crime. For the same amount of money you could put solar power on the the rooftops of $1million homes in Aotearoa.
yes we could put solar on every house but the old cunt would pull the hand brake on that one just ask the previous government what it was like when he was in coalition with them and prevented NZ from coming first .Sadly I voted for him that time and he fucked me over .
