Waatea News Column: Green Party victories this week betrayed by relationship with Labour but eclipses Maori Party
The Green Party had one of its best political weeks in Parliament ever last week.
It started with Julie Anne Genter’s blistering attack on Housing with a clean-cut 4 point plan to make an immediate change.
1. Removing tax incentives for investors by removing the five-year cap for the bright-line test.
2. Regulating investors’ access to mortgages, including
– Ending interest-only mortgages,
– Putting restrictions on debt to income ratios, especially for investment properties,
– Requiring cash deposits for mortgages on investment properties, not just equity from other homes.
3. Direct economic stimulus from the Government in the form of income support, instead of relying on the Reserve Bank.
4. A massive urban redevelopment and home building programme led by Kāinga Ora, until supply matches demand and prices stabilise at affordable levels.
Golriz followed that up by demanding Australia be named a rogue state for its appalling decision to force a teenager back to NZ with no family to care for him.
And Marama ended the week by calling out the classist and race-baiting fears expressed by National Party MP, Nicola Willis, when she said she was scared of walking through central Wellington because of the spike in social housing.
Marama went on to argue how deep-seated causes to homelessness are made worse by the very types of dog-whistle Nicola was attempting to summon up.
The Greens lead this week by being a Party of solutions, but because they are shackled to Labour, those solutions don’t mean much.
What it did show was that the Māori Party are going to have to work even harder to gain media oxygen if the Greens are going to be this sharp all year.

Sadly having just read Bernard Hickey’s summary of the new housing package, housing is going to worsen, pretty much on track as if the government stuck with doing nothing.

The Greens simply must get loud, angry, interupt and bludgeon the PM into action. She has done a classic Jacinda and tinkered ever so slightly.
Bernard Hickey who lectured for 10 years to sell property as there was about to be a property crash, while prices reached record highs instead. Have two friends who listened to him and never bought back into the property market and now not able to afford to buy a house again. What an expert. Sarcasm.
Maori Party will eclipse the Greens votes, as the biggest issue for housing is immigration. Even with Covid 120,000 additional people came to NZ from March 2011 and they all need housing. It is pure ignorance and ideology to ignore this from the Greens and Labour.
With Covid there are shortages of materials for building and infrastructure so even if government can miraculously start building affordable housing (that they have failed with for the past decade), there is so many shortages and delays of materials in the construction industry – you simply can’t get the housing built.
My prediction further tax dis incentives for rental landlords will encourage landlords to sell and the incoming people to NZ will buy the house. So there will be one less rental available and another family in NZ from overseas to be provided for in NZ.
So the housing policy was launched on StPatrick Fay and the day of the American cup final. Never seen it mentioned anywhere.The young Austrslisn asked to be sent home so own goal there. It is dangerous to walk around Wellington at night as Kate most city centers so what was so wrong in a politician saying it.
A real bunch of losers which is a shame as it was a party of substance when formed

He was going to be deported.
If he did not agree to be deported he was going to be put in an adult deportation center until the cows came home.
So what would you do eh.
So no it was not a bloody own goal.
It only proves you never read the whole article explaining why he asked for the deportation to be expedited.
As a 15 year old would you want to sit in an offshore deportation centre like manus island for years and no access to family of family relations.
