  1. Just another example of the callous and spiteful ways that employers run their businesses in New Zealand. I was hoping the current government would do more to roll back the so called employment ‘reforms’ of the past thirty years and restore a semblance of balance to the employment relationship.

Many otherwise nonviable businesses only exist in this country because of working for families and rent subsidies. They couldn’t sustain paying a livable wage because they don’t add enough value. A lot of these jobs were in the past only something you did part time while you were training up for a job that would pay properly and allow you to save for a house and start a family. In the ‘gig’ economy those quality value added jobs have largely disappeared. Added to this you have restrictions on older people retraining even with decades left to work before retirement (student allowance restrictions kick in at 44) and easy access to visas for employers who have pretended to look for local staff. Yet no one can work out how we have ended up with a low wage economy.
